ChatGPT Deep Research for Business (2026): Limits by Plan, Real Use Cases, and How to Check Its Sources

TL;DR: ChatGPT deep research for business

As of September 2026, ChatGPT deep research turns one question into a cited report by planning a search, reading the web, your files, and connected apps, and writing up what it found, which OpenAI says takes 5 to 30 minutes. Free and Go get a limited amount, Plus gets more, Pro gets the most, and ChatGPT Business Standard seats include it, with extra tasks at about 50 workspace credits each. OpenAI no longer prints a per-plan task count, so the "25 a month" figure you'll see everywhere is from 2025. It's worth running on decisions with real money attached, and only after you check the sources. Every fact below is from OpenAI's own pages, read September 12, 2026.

What deep research actually does

OpenAI's help center describes it as a way to "investigate complex questions, compare evidence, and produce results with citations or source links." In practice, a task runs in four stages:

  1. You describe the outcome. Type @Deepresearch or pick Deep research from the + menu, and say what the final report should look like.
  2. It proposes a plan. In Chat, you can edit the plan and limit which websites it uses. In ChatGPT Work and Codex it asks clarifying questions instead.
  3. It runs, and you can steer. You can watch progress and interrupt to narrow the focus or change sources.
  4. You get a report. In Chat it opens full screen with a table of contents, a sources-used section, and an activity history. You can download it as Markdown, Word, or PDF.

Since OpenAI's February 10, 2026 update, it can also pull from connected apps and MCP sources, and you can restrict web searches to sites you trust. That second part is the most underused setting in the whole product.

What it isn't: a faster chat. OpenAI says it plainly: "For quick lookups or short conversations, standard chat may be faster." If the answer fits in one search, don't spend a research task on it.

Deep research limits by plan (and the stale number everyone quotes)

Plan Price Deep research in Chat Beyond the included amount
Free $0 Limited Wait for the reset
Go $8/month Limited Wait for the reset
Plus $20/month Expanded Wait for the reset
Pro $100 or $200/month Maximum Wait for the reset
Business Standard seat $20 annual / $25 monthly Included About 50 workspace credits per task

The plan labels are OpenAI's own words from its pricing page. It doesn't attach numbers anymore. The help center says an in-product counter shows your remaining tasks, and plans with a fixed monthly allowance reset every 30 days from the date you first used it, not on the 1st of the month.

Google's AI Overview for "chatgpt deep research" still says Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users get 25 queries a month. That comes from OpenAI's April 2025 update, back when Business was called Team. Don't plan a team's month around it. Check the counter.

Two footnotes. OpenAI paused new sign-ups for Pro $200 on September 10, 2026, so Pro $100 is the top plan most people can buy right now. And Edu is the one plan with a published number: 5 deep research queries per rolling 24 hours at no credit cost.

Deep research in Chat vs in ChatGPT Work

This is where teams get confused about limits, because the same feature draws from two different meters.

  • In Chat, deep research has its own task allowance. It reads the web, your uploads, and supported connected apps, using read actions only. It never writes to your apps.
  • In ChatGPT Work, OpenAI says deep research "uses your existing Work/Codex allowance or credits" and doesn't touch the Chat allowance. It uses whatever sources the Work task has, and it can hand you an editable file.

So a Business user who's burned their Chat tasks can often still research inside Work, and vice versa. The Work side runs on the same 5-hour meter as everything else there, which I broke down on ChatGPT usage limits. What Work is good for beyond research is on ChatGPT Work for business.

Six business jobs worth a deep research task

My bar: run deep research when a wrong answer costs more than an hour of someone's time. Here are the six jobs that clear it for most small businesses.

  1. Vendor shortlist. "Compare the five payroll providers that serve 10 to 50 employees in Texas. Use each vendor's own pricing page. Table: base fee, per-employee fee, contract length." Restrict sites to the vendors' domains.
  2. Competitor pricing sweep. What your three closest competitors charge, what's included, and what changed this year. Verify every price on the live page before it goes in a proposal.
  3. Pre-call prospect brief. A company's recent news, leadership changes, and public priorities before a sales call. Fifteen minutes of reading you didn't have to do.
  4. New service line check. Who else offers it locally, what they charge, and how they describe it. Useful for positioning. Treat any market-size number as a lead, not a fact.
  5. Licensing or compliance checklist. "What does a home-services business need to operate in a new state?" Good for the question list. Your lawyer or accountant still signs off.
  6. Customer research from your own notes. Upload call notes or survey exports and ask for recurring objections, with quotes. Here the sources are yours, so checking is fast.

Where deep research goes wrong

OpenAI's own launch post lists the limitations, and they're still the right ones to watch. It "can sometimes hallucinate facts," it "may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors," and it's weak at "confidence calibration," meaning it sounds just as sure about a guess as about a fact.

For business research, that shows up in three predictable ways: a 2024 blog post cited for a 2026 price, a vendor's marketing claim reported as a finding, and a precise-looking number with no primary source behind it. None of those are rare. All of them are catchable.

How to check its sources in 10 minutes

  1. Open the sources-used section and the activity history. Skim what it actually read. A report built on three aggregator blogs is a draft, not research.
  2. Pick the five claims your decision hinges on. Not all 60. The price, the deadline, the requirement, the number going in the deck.
  3. Click through each one. Find the sentence on the source page that supports it. If you can't find it in 60 seconds, the claim is unverified.
  4. Check the date. Pricing, limits, and regulations go stale fast. Anything older than this year gets rechecked on the primary page.
  5. Prefer the primary source. The vendor's pricing page over a review site, the state agency over a law firm's blog.
  6. Rerun what matters with sites restricted. Under Sites, Manage sites, limit the task to the primary domains and compare the answers.
  7. Ask for the gaps. Follow up with "List every claim in this report that isn't directly supported by a cited source." It's surprisingly honest when asked.

The cost math

On ChatGPT Business, OpenAI's rate card puts a deep research task at about 50 credits when it's billed with workspace credits. For scale, that's the same as five GPT-5.6 Sol messages, ten image generations, or 40 minutes of voice. Business credits are optional, bought under Workspace settings, Billing, and valid for 12 months. OpenAI's rate card lists credits, not a dollar price per credit, so check your Billing page before you budget.

The better math is time. Say a vendor comparison would take an office manager three hours at $40 an hour. That's $120 of labor. A deep research task plus 10 minutes of source checking gets you a first draft you can trust, on a seat that costs $20 a month. If deep research is the main reason someone wants a paid plan, is ChatGPT Plus worth it covers the personal side, and ChatGPT Business pricing covers the team side.

Setting it up for a team

  • Keep web search on. OpenAI's admin notes say web search must be enabled for deep research to be available.
  • Connect the right apps. Deep research can read supported sources like Google Drive or SharePoint, but only what each person is already allowed to see.
  • Know the data rules. Deep research in Chat follows the same data handling as regular ChatGPT, and OpenAI doesn't train on Business data by default.
  • Write the checking routine down. The seven steps above, pinned in your shared project, beat any training session.

The workspace side, including roles, apps, and the shared project to pin that routine in, is in my ChatGPT Business setup guide. If you'd rather have it built for you, that's the ChatGPT Business setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ChatGPT deep research?
It's a ChatGPT mode for multi-step research. You describe the outcome you need, ChatGPT proposes a research plan you can edit, then it searches the web, your uploaded files, and supported connected apps and returns a structured report with citations or source links. As of September 2026 it runs in Chat and, where available, in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI's launch post says a task can take 5 to 30 minutes.
How many deep research tasks do you get in ChatGPT?
OpenAI doesn't publish a fixed count on its current pages. As of September 2026, chatgpt.com/pricing lists deep research as Limited on Free and Go, Expanded on Plus, and Maximum on Pro, and the help center says an in-product counter shows your remaining tasks, with fixed monthly allowances resetting every 30 days from first use. The widely quoted 25 a month for Plus comes from OpenAI's April 2025 update. Deep research inside ChatGPT Work uses your Work and Codex allowance instead.
Is ChatGPT deep research free?
Free and Go accounts get a limited amount. As of September 2026, OpenAI's pricing page lists deep research as Limited on both, with more on Plus at $20 a month and the most on Pro. ChatGPT Business Standard seats include deep research, and workspaces can buy credits for usage beyond the included limits.
How much does a deep research task cost on ChatGPT Business?
When it's billed with workspace credits, OpenAI's rate card lists a deep research task at about 50 credits, the same as five GPT-5.6 Sol messages, ten image generations, or 40 minutes of voice. Business workspace credits are bought under Workspace settings, Billing and stay valid for 12 months. Deep research run inside ChatGPT Work draws on the Work and Codex allowance or credits instead.
Can ChatGPT deep research use my company's files?
Yes, within limits. In Chat it reads the public web and files you upload by default, and it can use supported connected apps such as Google Drive or SharePoint when they're enabled for your workspace and you're authorized. It only uses read actions, never write actions, and it can't see anything your own account can't access. OpenAI's admin notes say web search has to be enabled for deep research to be available.
How do you check ChatGPT deep research sources?
Open the report's sources section and activity history, pick the five claims your decision actually depends on, and click through to confirm each source says what the report says, how old it is, and whether it's a primary source. For anything that matters, rerun the task restricted to trusted sites under Sites, Manage sites. OpenAI's own launch post warns that deep research can hallucinate facts and struggle to tell authoritative information from rumors.
