ChatGPT Plus vs Business: the short answer

As of September 2026, ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business both start at $20 a month, and that's where the similarity ends. Plus is one person, billed monthly, and OpenAI may train on your conversations unless you opt out. Business is a workspace with a two-seat minimum ($20 a seat billed annually, $25 monthly), no training on your data by default, admin controls, shared projects for the team, and thinking tiers Plus doesn't get. If anyone besides you uses it, or customer data goes into it, buy Business. If you're solo and only paste public information, buy Plus. I set these up for owner-led businesses, and the question I get is almost always framed wrong: "Is Business worth $5 more?" It isn't $5 more. It's a different product with a two-seat floor, so the real comparison is $20 against $40. Here's what the second $20 buys.

ChatGPT Plus vs Business side by side

Three rows carry the decision. The training default, because support email and financials are customer data. The shared-projects row, because a Business project is where a team's instructions and files live in one place with project-only memory, and a Plus project is a personal folder you can invite a few people into. And the thinking row, because Business gets Extra High and Pro and 15 GPT-6 Pro messages a month, while Plus stops at High and doesn't get GPT-6 Pro in Chat at all.

The row that surprises people is Work and Codex. A Standard seat gets the same per-five-hour estimates as Plus. Business doesn't buy more agentic usage unless you go to a $100 Premium seat. The full meter-by-meter breakdown is on ChatGPT usage limits.

What Plus is for

Plus is the best $20 in software for one person who wants the good models. OpenAI's pricing page lists it as everything in Go plus advanced reasoning with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6, expanded uploads and deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, expanded Codex, and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web, and mobile. As of August 25, 2026, ChatGPT Work's browser can also sign in to websites for you on Plus and Pro. My use-case verdicts are on is ChatGPT Plus worth it.

What Plus is not: a place for customer data, unless you've turned off training in data controls and you're comfortable that the opt-out is the only control you have. And it can't be shared. A "team Plus account" with one login is against OpenAI's terms and also a terrible idea for the day that person leaves.

One 2026 footnote: OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200 on September 10, 2026. Pro $100 is unaffected. If you were thinking "Plus now, Pro later," the top tier may not be there when you get there.

What Business is for

Business is the plan where ChatGPT becomes a company tool instead of a personal one. From OpenAI's Business overview, a Standard seat includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, plus GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent, and Deep Research. A seat is paid capacity separate from the member, so when someone leaves you reassign the seat instead of cancelling and re-buying.

The things you can't get on Plus at any price:

• The data terms. "OpenAI won't train on your workspace's data." Members' chats stay private from each other; usage analytics show spend, not transcripts.
• Control over who's in. SAML SSO and MFA, roles, and one bill. Remove a person and their access ends.
• Team context. Shared projects with groups and workspace links, 40 files each, and the Company Knowledge plugin that answers from connected apps like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
• Workspace agents. Repeatable workflows you build once, connect to apps, share with the team, and run on a schedule or in Slack.
• Spend controls. Workspace credits with spend controls, so one person's experiment doesn't become the company's bill.

What Business doesn't include, per OpenAI: a BAA, invoice or PO billing, and zero data retention, all of which need a contracted (Enterprise) offering. And there's no data export from a Business workspace, which is worth knowing before you put three years of work in it.

Three owner scenarios, with a verdict

1. Solo consultant or owner, no employees, public-facing work

You write proposals, research prospects, draft posts, and summarize calls. Nothing you paste is a customer's private data, or you've opted out of training and you're fine with that being the safeguard. Verdict: Plus, $20. Business would cost $40 to $50 for a second seat nobody sits in. Revisit the day you hire.

2. Owner plus one to ten staff, customer data in the mix

An assistant answers email, a bookkeeper reconciles, a sales person works leads. People will paste customer names, invoices, and complaints into it whether you tell them to or not. Verdict: Business Standard, $20 a seat billed annually. Five seats is $100 a month, you own the workspace, nobody's chats train a model, and the support and sales playbooks live in shared projects the whole team can chat with. 3. A small team where one person runs heavy automations

Same as above, except one person is in ChatGPT Work or Codex all day and keeps hitting the five-hour wall. Verdict: Business, with Standard seats for most and one Premium seat at $100 billed annually for that person. Premium is 5x Standard's Work and Codex usage with no 5-hour limit and 50 GPT-6 Pro messages a week. Don't buy Premium for the org chart; buy it after the usage analytics show who actually needs it. The one-line rule

If it's just you and the data is yours, Plus. The moment a second person or a customer's data enters the picture, Business, and set the spend caps on day one. The $20 sticker is the same.
