ChatGPT Work for Business (2026): What It Does, What a $20 Seat Gets, and the First Jobs I'd Hand It

ChatGPT Work: the short answer

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent for multi-step jobs that end in something you can use: a deck, a spreadsheet, a brief, a scheduled report. As of September 2026 it's included in every ChatGPT Business seat ($20 a user a month billed annually), available on web and mobile for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and on desktop for every plan. It's metered like Codex, on a shared allowance per 5-hour window, so the model you pick decides how far a seat goes. Chat answers questions. Work does the job and hands you the file. That's the whole pitch, and for once it's mostly accurate. The business questions are what it costs, what it can touch, and which jobs are worth handing over.

What ChatGPT Work actually does

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work in July 2026 as "an agent in ChatGPT that helps you take on more ambitious tasks." It pulls context from your apps and files, makes a plan, and builds the output. OpenAI's help center splits the three experiences like this:

• Chat: quick questions, search, brainstorming, short drafts.
• Work: "an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables," such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites.
• Codex: software development, kept as a separate view in the desktop app.

The parts that matter for a small business:

• Plugins. OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 1,400, including Google Drive, Gmail, Outlook, Teams, Slack, SharePoint, and Salesforce. You can point Work at one by typing @ and its name.
• Scheduled tasks. Run a job once, on a schedule, or when something happens. OpenAI lists event triggers for new Gmail messages, new Slack channel messages, and GitHub pull request activity on eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts.
• Plan mode. Work gathers context, asks questions, and shows a step-by-step plan you approve before it starts.
• Local or cloud. On desktop it can use local files and apps. Cloud tasks keep running after you close the app or shut the laptop.

Which plans get ChatGPT Work

OpenAI's product page says Work is "available to all plans on desktop and to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu on web and mobile." Free and Go get limited access in the desktop app only.

On a Business workspace, a Standard seat includes "ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex." It also includes GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's newest model, but only "limited Astra usage" on Standard. What Work costs on a Business seat: one shared pool

Work doesn't have its own price. OpenAI says it "follows the same usage structure as Codex," and its rate card says ChatGPT Work, Codex, ChatGPT for Excel, and Workspace Agents all draw from the same agentic usage and credit pool.

Those ranges are wide because a "message" in Work can be a two-minute lookup or a two-hour build. Past the included allowance, a workspace can pay in credits, which OpenAI prices by tokens: GPT-6 Astra runs 250 credits per million input tokens and 1,250 per million output tokens, and Fast mode on Astra costs 2.5x. ChatGPT Work vs the old agent mode

If you tried ChatGPT agent mode in 2025, Work will feel familiar: it plans, uses tools, and asks before important actions. The metering is the big difference. As of September 12, 2026, OpenAI's help center still documents agent mode at 40 messages a month on Plus and on Business and Enterprise, and 400 on Pro. Work runs on the Codex-style allowance per 5-hour window instead, which is far more room for a team that uses it daily.

OpenAI describes Work as the agent for "longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables," and it's where the new pieces are landing: Sites, the desktop browser, scheduled and event-triggered tasks. For anything you'd have handed agent mode, start in Work.

The admin settings I'd set on day one

An agent that can read your Slack and send emails deserves five minutes of setup before the whole team gets it.

• Decide local vs cloud by role. Under Workspace settings, then Permissions and roles, owners can turn Work Cloud, Work Local, and Codex Local on or off separately. Browser use and network access have their own controls.
• Install only the plugins a job needs. Every connected app is more context and more exposure. OpenAI's own safety guidance for its agent features is to enable only the apps needed for the task.
• Keep "leave it unsent for review" in every prompt that touches email or clients. OpenAI's example prompts do this, and so should yours.
• Know the local-file caveat. OpenAI says "messages and task context may be stored in the cloud, even when work runs locally."
• No patient data on Business. OpenAI doesn't offer a BAA for ChatGPT Business, and even in HIPAA-eligible workspaces cloud browser use and event-triggered tasks aren't covered. Details on is ChatGPT HIPAA compliant.

The first five jobs I'd hand it in a small business

Good Work tasks have a clear outcome, a few sources, and an output someone reviews. These are the ones I'd start with, adapted from OpenAI's own examples:

1. Monday brief. "Every Monday at 7am, read my calendar, Slack, and last week's Drive changes. Write a one-page brief with priorities, risks, decisions needed, and follow-ups."
2. Inbox triage. "Find the emails I need to answer, summarize each, draft replies, and leave them unsent."
3. Pipeline diff. "Compare this week's pipeline spreadsheet with last week's. Summarize what moved, what stalled, and who needs a nudge."
4. Month-end variance. "Pull this month's P&L export and last month's, explain the five biggest changes, and build a two-slide summary for the owners' meeting."
5. Proposal first draft. "Using this discovery call transcript and our proposal template in Drive, draft a proposal with three options. Flag anything you had to assume."

Notice what's missing: anything that sends, pays, or deletes without a human looking. Work can do those. It shouldn't, yet. The broader version of this, beyond one vendor, is on AI agents for small business.

Where it breaks

• Allowance burn. Astra on a vague task can eat a Standard seat's 5-hour window in a handful of runs. Scope tightly and use Terra or Luna for grunt work.
• Garbage context. Work is only as good as the folder you point it at. If your Drive is chaos, the brief will be confident chaos.
• Review debt. A finished-looking deck is easy to forward without reading. Somebody still owns the numbers.

The teams that get value from Work treat it like a sharp new hire: specific assignments, the right files, and a review before anything leaves the building.
