ChatGPT Credits (2026): How Many You Get With Plus, What One Costs, What They Buy

The short answer

ChatGPT Plus comes with zero credits. As of October 27, 2026, every ChatGPT plan gives you an included usage allowance, and credits are what you buy when it runs out. On Plus and Pro, credits buy more Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, not more regular chat. OpenAI doesn't print a price per credit, but its own docs put one at about 4 cents. So the question "how many credits do I get" has a short answer and a more useful one: you get none, and you'll only need them if you use ChatGPT to do work rather than to chat.

That's the source of most of the confusion. The searches landing on my ChatGPT usage limits page keep asking for a credit count that OpenAI never set. Everything below is from OpenAI's own pricing docs and help center, read today, and the dollar math is mine.

What a ChatGPT credit is

A credit is OpenAI's unit for paying for usage after your plan's included limit. ChatGPT now uses the same pricing, credits and limits as Codex, so one credit balance covers several features. The order is always the same: your plan's included usage first, then your credit balance. If you have no credits, you wait for the limit to reset.

What credits pay for depends on the plan:

Plan Credits included What credits buy Who buys them
Free, Go 0 Codex and ChatGPT Work, for a limited group of accounts only You, if "Add credits" shows up
Plus ($20) 0 Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel, PowerPoint You, in Settings > Usage
Pro ($100, $200 or $500) 0 The same features, after Pro's bigger allowance You
Business ($20 to $25 a seat, Premium $100 to $125) 0 A shared pool for advanced chat models, deep research, agent mode, images, voice, Work and Codex once a seat's limit is used The workspace owner, in Settings > Billing
Enterprise, Edu Set by contract Everything advanced draws from a contracted pool Your OpenAI account team

The line people miss is the Plus row. A Plus user who runs out of GPT-6 Sol messages in chat can't buy a credit pack to keep chatting. Credits only extend the agentic work: a Codex task, a ChatGPT Work job, an Excel or PowerPoint request. On Business, the workspace pool also covers chat on the advanced models.

What one credit is worth in dollars

OpenAI says credit prices "depend on your plan or agreement" and doesn't list one. Two of its own numbers settle it anyway:

  • Voice. The pricing docs bill desktop voice at $0.05 a minute, and the credit rate card lists the same voice minute at 1.25 credits. $0.05 divided by 1.25 is $0.04 a credit.
  • The API. Every credit rate I checked is exactly 25 times the model's API list price per million tokens. GPT-6.1 Terra is $1 input and $5 output on the API, and 25 and 125 credits in ChatGPT. GPT-6 Astra is $10 and $50, and 250 and 1,250 credits. GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Sol line up the same way, cached input included. Twenty-five credits to the dollar is 4 cents each.

So budget at about 4 cents a credit, and read the real number on the checkout screen, since OpenAI reserves the right to price it differently by plan, region or contract.

What things cost in credits

OpenAI's rate card gives approximate per-use costs. Here they are with the dollar value at 4 cents:

Use Credits (approx.) About
Instant model message Unlimited, no credits $0
GPT-6 Sol or GPT-5.6 Sol message 10 $0.40
GPT-6 Pro message 50 $2.00
Agent mode message 30 $1.20
Deep research report 50 $2.00
Image 5 $0.20
Voice, per minute 1.25 $0.05
ChatGPT for Excel or Sheets task 5 to 20 $0.20 to $0.80
ChatGPT for PowerPoint task 10 to 50 $0.40 to $2.00

The per-message rows come from the Business and Enterprise rate card. Plus and Pro credits don't buy chat messages, so for a personal plan the rows that matter are Excel, PowerPoint, Work and Codex. Business workspaces get one more break: if ChatGPT quietly routes a short question to a mini model, OpenAI says that message uses 0 credits.

Why the same task can cost 1 credit or 11

Work, Codex, Word, Excel and PowerPoint bill by tokens, so the model you pick moves the bill more than the task does. Take one ordinary spreadsheet job: about 30,000 tokens in (the sheet plus your instructions) and 3,000 out. On OpenAI's rate card:

  • GPT-6.1 Terra: 0.75 credits in + 0.375 out = about 1.1 credits (4.5 cents).
  • GPT-5.6 Sol: 3 + 1.5 = 4.5 credits (18 cents), the default in Word and the middle of OpenAI's "2 to 15 credits" for a typical Sol task.
  • GPT-6 Astra: 7.5 + 3.75 = about 11.3 credits (45 cents).

That's a 10x spread for the same answer on most spreadsheet work. Speed is the other multiplier: on purchased credits, Fast mode costs 2x the standard rate and Ultrafast 6x (against your included allowance it's steeper, 2.5x and 8x). An employee who leaves Astra and Ultrafast on burns 60 times what the same job costs on Terra at normal speed. That's the first thing to check when a credit balance drains faster than you expected.

Buy credits or upgrade to Pro?

The math is simple once a credit is 4 cents. Plus is $20. Pro starts at $100, and OpenAI says it carries no five-hour limit. If a month of Excel decks and Codex jobs costs you more than about $80 in credits on top of Plus, Pro is the cheaper way to buy the same work, and you stop watching a meter. If you top up $10 or $20 now and then, stay on Plus. The full Pro verdict, including the $200 and $500 tiers, is on is ChatGPT Pro worth it.

Developers have a third option. Codex can also run on an API key, billed at the API rates directly. Which of the three is cheapest for a coding workload is laid out on Codex pricing.

For a team: who controls the credit pool

On ChatGPT Business, credits are optional and pooled. Each seat uses its own included limits first. Only when someone runs out, and only if the owner has bought credits, does their work draw from the shared pool. That design has one trap: the person who uses the most can drain the pool for everyone, and nothing in a Standard seat stops them.

Three settings in Workspace settings > Billing prevent most surprises: usage alerts, automatic recharge with a maximum, and a decision about which jobs actually deserve Pro models and agent mode. The seat prices and where Premium seats pay off are on ChatGPT Business pricing. If you'd rather have the workspace set up with those limits and the first workflows built before everyone gets a seat, that's the ChatGPT Business setup.

The fine print

  • They expire. Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase, on personal plans and Business.
  • They aren't refundable, except for a verified billing error, unauthorized use or an OpenAI service failure.
  • They aren't API credits and they aren't your ChatGPT wallet. A gift card adds wallet dollars, not credits.
  • Your balance can go negative if a long task finishes after the balance hits zero. The next purchase pays it off first.
  • Promotions change the math. OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol's promotional pricing applies to purchased credits at least through November 21, 2026. Included plan limits don't change with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits do you get with ChatGPT Plus?
None. As of October 2026, ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) comes with an included usage allowance, not a credit balance. Credits are a pay-as-you-go add-on: once you hit your plan's limit in Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel or PowerPoint, you can buy credits in Settings > Usage and keep working. Your plan's included usage is always spent first.
How much does one ChatGPT credit cost?
OpenAI doesn't publish a per-credit price; it says purchase prices and discounts depend on your plan or agreement. Its own docs pin the value at about 4 cents, though: desktop voice is billed at $0.05 a minute and at 1.25 credits a minute, and every model's credit rate is exactly 25 times its API list price per million tokens. Treat 4 cents as the list value and check the checkout screen for your actual price.
Do ChatGPT credits give you more chat messages on Plus?
No. On Plus and Pro, OpenAI lists credits for Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Regular chat on a personal plan stays on its own limits. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, workspace credits also cover advanced chat models, deep research, agent mode, images and voice once a seat's included usage is gone.
Do ChatGPT credits expire?
Yes. Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase and unused ones don't roll over. They're also non-refundable (except for billing errors, unauthorized use or an OpenAI failure), non-transferable, and separate from both API credits and your ChatGPT wallet balance.
How many credits does a deep research report use?
OpenAI's Business and Enterprise rate card lists about 50 credits per deep research task, 30 per agent mode message, 10 per GPT-6 Sol or GPT-5.6 Sol message, 50 per GPT-6 Pro message, 5 per image and 1.25 per voice minute. At about 4 cents a credit, a deep research report is roughly $2 and a Sol message roughly 40 cents.
Is it cheaper to buy credits or upgrade to ChatGPT Pro?
If you're buying more than about $80 of credits a month on Plus, Pro at $100 is the better deal: Plus plus $80 of credits is $100, and Pro comes with a much bigger allowance and no five-hour limit. Under about $40 a month in credits, stay on Plus and top up.
