ChatGPT for PowerPoint (2026): The Add-In, What a Deck Costs, and When to Use Slides Instead

The short answer

ChatGPT for PowerPoint is OpenAI's add-in that opens ChatGPT in a sidebar inside PowerPoint. As of October 31, 2026 it's on every plan, with limited use on Free and Go. It builds and edits real, editable slides in your file. A typical message uses 10 to 50 credits, so a seven-message deck comes to 70 to 350 credits, or $2.80 to $14 if you've run out of allowance and have to buy them.

Slides are pricier than spreadsheets. OpenAI's rate card puts a PowerPoint message at 2 to 2.5 times an Excel message (10 to 50 credits against 5 to 20). Every "make it pop" costs real usage, so it pays to know what a deck runs before your team starts iterating on one at 11pm.

What a deck costs

OpenAI gives a per-message figure and stops there, but nobody makes a deck in one message. Say you ask for one draft and six rounds of changes:

Work Messages Credits (10 to 50 each) If you bought them all
One small edit 1 10 to 50 $0.40 to $2
One deck: draft plus six revisions 7 70 to 350 $2.80 to $14
Five decks a month 35 350 to 1,750 $14 to $70

The last column is the worst case, at about 4 cents a credit, and it assumes your plan's allowance is already gone. On Plus, Pro and Business, this comes out of your allowance first. That allowance is shared with your other agentic work, so a heavy deck week can leave you short on everything else. ChatGPT usage limits shows how the plans compare.

OpenAI also says larger decks and multi-step edits use more. So the way to spend less is simple: ask for a plan before you ask for slides. "Before editing, outline which slides you would change and why" is OpenAI's own suggested prompt. It's a lot cheaper to fix an outline than to rebuild ten finished slides.

Add-in, Slides or Claude: pick the route

"ChatGPT for PowerPoint" and "ChatGPT Slides" sound like the same thing. They aren't, and the difference decides what you pay for.

Route Where the deck lives Who gets it Best for
ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in Your own .pptx, in PowerPoint Every plan, limited on Free and Go Editing an existing deck, working in a company template
ChatGPT Slides A shared deck in ChatGPT's Space, exported later Pro, Business and Enterprise A team writing a deck together from scratch
Claude for PowerPoint Your own .pptx, in PowerPoint Paid Claude plans Teams already paying for Claude

If you're on Plus, the add-in is your route, because ChatGPT Slides isn't included. If you're on Claude, Claude for PowerPoint does the same job in the same place. Nobody should pay for a second AI subscription to get a slightly nicer deck.

What it does well, and where it stops

OpenAI's examples are honest about the target: board updates, business reviews, strategy decks. It builds from notes and source files, adds a slide where you say, and answers questions like "What is the story of this deck?" That last one might be the best use of the whole thing. Ask it what's missing before your CFO does.

OpenAI also lists the limits, and it's worth planning around them:

  • Your template. It tries to follow it, but slides may not match your style perfectly.
  • Charts and shapes. Advanced edits may be limited or still in development.
  • Accuracy. OpenAI warns it can make mistakes, including when editing or deleting content.

Skills help with the template problem, since they can hold your style rules and structure so you aren't retyping them. Even so, plan on a person doing a final pass.

The line in the terms most owners won't read

OpenAI's help page includes this: as part of Microsoft's add-in marketplace terms, "Microsoft may have the ability to read the content of your PowerPoint files." If you already keep files in Microsoft 365, that may not change much. But it's two companies' terms, not one. Data handling follows your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings, plus Microsoft's terms for the add-in.

For a sales deck, that's probably fine. For a deck with unannounced numbers, acquisition talks or payroll, get someone to decide on purpose. Which account, which plan and what's off limits are part of what I set up in an AI implementation.

Install it once

In PowerPoint, go to Home, then Add-ins, search for ChatGPT, add it, then open it from the ribbon and sign in. If your company blocks the store, a Microsoft 365 admin can upload OpenAI's manifest file under Integrated apps.

It's the same add-in as ChatGPT for Word and Excel, so one install covers all three.

Check a deck before it leaves the building

  1. Duplicate the file first. OpenAI says so too.
  2. Tell it what to leave alone. "Do not change the surrounding slides" belongs in the prompt.
  3. Trace every number to its source. Open the spreadsheet or report and match each one by hand.
  4. Flip through the slides it didn't mention. You're looking for anything that changed without being asked.

Today's micro-action

Open a copy of your last big presentation and type: "What is the story of this deck? List the three questions a skeptical board member would ask that it doesn't answer." That's one message, and you'll have a better sense of the tool than any demo could give you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT for PowerPoint free?
The add-in costs nothing to install, and OpenAI lists it on Free and Go with limited usage. Plus, Pro and Business get it subject to their agentic usage limit, as of October 31, 2026. Past your allowance, you'd need credits, and a typical message uses 10 to 50.
How much does ChatGPT for PowerPoint cost per deck?
OpenAI prices it by message, not by deck. At 10 to 50 credits a message, a deck that takes seven messages uses 70 to 350 credits. At about 4 cents a credit, that's $2.80 to $14 if you've used up your allowance. Bigger decks and heavier edits land higher.
Can ChatGPT edit an existing PowerPoint?
Yes. It works in the open file, so it can add or revise slides and tighten a deck for an audience while keeping the slides editable. OpenAI recommends naming what to preserve, asking for a plan before large edits, and duplicating the file first.
Is ChatGPT for PowerPoint the same as ChatGPT Slides?
No. The add-in works inside PowerPoint on your own file. ChatGPT Slides builds a shared deck inside ChatGPT that your team edits together, and it's only on Pro, Business and Enterprise. If your deck has to live in a company template, start with the add-in.
Will ChatGPT follow my company PowerPoint template?
It tries to, but OpenAI lists template adherence as a current limitation: generated slides may not match your preferred style perfectly. Advanced charts, shapes and formatting may also be limited, so plan on a final pass by hand.
Can an admin install ChatGPT for PowerPoint for the whole company?
Yes. If your organization can't reach the Microsoft store for this add-in, a Microsoft 365 admin can upload OpenAI's manifest file under Integrated apps, then assign it to users or groups. Admins also control it in the ChatGPT workspace settings.
