Claude for PowerPoint: What It Is, Who Gets It, and Whether It Beats Copilot (2026)

TL;DR: The Second Add-in, and the More Visible One

Anthropic's first Office add-in put Claude in the spreadsheet. The second one puts it in the room where budgets get approved. Claude for PowerPoint landed February 5, 2026 as a research preview for the top-end plans, and on February 20 Anthropic opened it to every Pro subscriber and switched on connector support the same day — so the AI building your slides can pull context from the tools your business actually runs on. Like the Excel add-in, the quiet headline is who already owns it: if you pay $20/month for Claude Pro, this is sitting uninstalled in your subscription right now.

What it actually does

• Generates native, editable slides — real PowerPoint objects you can keep working on by hand, not an exported image of a deck. Charts and full-deck outlines from a natural-language brief.
• Reads your slide master first — layouts, fonts, brand colors. The deck comes out looking like your deck, which is the exact thing standalone AI deck generators don't do.
• Edits decks in place — restructure a narrative, tighten fifteen wordy slides, rebuild a section around new numbers, all inside the file that's open.
• Pulls context through connectors — since February 20, 2026 the add-in supports Claude's connectors, bringing material from your other tools directly into slide work.

How to get it (and who gets it)

Requirements as of August 2026: a paid Claude plan — Pro at $20/month, Max, Team, or Enterprise. Install Anthropic's add-in from the Microsoft add-in store, sign in with your Claude account, and the panel appears in PowerPoint. The fair comparison, having built client decks with both: Copilot wins the moments, Claude wins the argument. Copilot is right there in the ribbon and bundled into Microsoft's pricing — fast for summarizing a deck, generating a slide from a prompt, cleaning up what's in front of you. Claude is stronger when the deck is really a piece of thinking: turning a messy brief into a structured narrative, holding your template while it does it, and reaching into your other tools for the numbers. Add-in vs add-in vs connector: the three Claude-in-Office stories

Anthropic now has three ways into your Office stack, and they're different products. The Microsoft 365 connector lets Claude reach into your OneDrive and SharePoint files from a Claude conversation. Claude for Excel puts Claude inside the workbook, doing spreadsheet work in place. Claude for PowerPoint is the same move for decks — Claude comes to you, inside the file, producing native slides. Deck-heavy roles want this one; spreadsheet-heavy roles want Excel; everyone gets mileage from the connector. Paid plans include all three.

Update (September 2026): there is now a fourth door outside Office. Claude in Chrome works in the browser tabs where your other tools live, and it comes with the same paid plans.

The research-preview caveats

Anthropic calls this a research preview and it's worth taking them at their word. Early coverage flagged enterprise audit logging and session history as incomplete, and — as with any AI that reads documents — prompt-injection via file contents remains a standing caution. My read for small businesses: acceptable trade for the speed on ordinary decks, but ask whoever owns your compliance posture before pointing it at regulated or genuinely confidential material. Version your important decks, same as you would with any collaborator.

The business-owner answer

Here's the honest sequence, as of 2026. First: if you're on Claude Pro, install this today — the first "turn these notes into Thursday's deck" session pays for the five minutes of setup. Second: notice what the add-in doesn't fix. Someone still has to open PowerPoint and drive, and the deck you make every month is still yours to make every month.
