OpenAI API Credits: ChatGPT Pro and Business Now Include Up to $500 a Month
As of October 28, 2026, ChatGPT Pro comes with monthly OpenAI API credits equal to the plan price: $100, $200 or $500. ChatGPT Business gets $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled up to $500 a month. Plus doesn't qualify. You claim it once, it renews automatically, and whatever you don't use in the month is gone.
This almost slipped past me because the prices didn't change. It's a line in OpenAI's release notes. It also matches a deal Anthropic launched three weeks earlier nearly dollar for dollar, which tells you what these two are competing for: the people building on them, not only the people chatting with them.
Who gets OpenAI API credits, and how much?
| Plan | Monthly API credit |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Pro 100 | $100 |
| ChatGPT Pro 200 | $200 |
| ChatGPT Pro 500 | $500 |
| Business Standard seat | $20 per paid seat, pooled |
| Business Premium seat | $100 per paid seat, pooled |
| Business workspace cap | $500 total a month |
| Plus, free trials | Not eligible |
| Enterprise, Edu, legacy Codex seats | Not listed as eligible |
Your subscription has to be active for at least 7 days first, and the first grant is prorated. The full rate card these credits spend against is on my OpenAI API pricing page.
Where the Business cap kicks in
The pool is the smaller of ($20 × Standard seats + $100 × Premium seats) and $500. So the cap arrives faster than you'd think.
| Workspace | Before the cap | You get | Per seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Standard | $40 | $40 | $20 |
| 10 Standard | $200 | $200 | $20 |
| 25 Standard | $500 | $500 | $20 |
| 50 Standard | $1,000 | $500 | $10 |
| 10 Standard + 4 Premium | $600 | $500 | $35.71 |
Annual workspaces get the full year up front, capped at $6,000, and it expires when the billing cycle ends.
What does the credit actually buy?
These are my own worked examples on OpenAI's standard rates, read November 1: GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 in and $10 out per million tokens, and GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 and $0.50. The token counts are assumptions, so swap in yours.
| Job | Tokens in / out | Model | Cost each | $20 buys | $100 buys |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sort one inbound email | 2,000 / 300 | Luna | $0.00035 | 57,142 | 285,714 |
| Summarize a long document | 20,000 / 1,500 | Sol | $0.055 | 363 | 1,818 |
| One agent run | 30,000 / 3,000 | Sol | $0.09 | 222 | 1,111 |
For a small business, that's the real point. A 10-seat Business workspace gets $200 a month, which is enough to run an email-sorting or document-summary automation for free. You've probably been paying for that seat either way. If you want one of those built properly, that's the AI implementation work I do.
How do you claim it?
- Use the same email for your ChatGPT account and API account.
- On Pro, open Settings > Billing in ChatGPT. On Business, open the workspace billing settings or the Admin Console.
- Find the API credits benefit, pick the API organization, and confirm.
- Check the balance in API Platform billing settings.
You don't need to add a payment method to use the grant. On Business, one person must own both the ChatGPT workspace and the API organization. An admin role isn't enough, which will trip up plenty of small companies where the person who set up ChatGPT isn't the person who set up the API.
The catches
- No rollover. Monthly grants expire at the end of the billing cycle.
- It isn't ChatGPT credits. ChatGPT credits buy more usage inside ChatGPT. These don't raise your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits at all.
- No Codex through API keys. OpenAI excludes it by name.
- One link. One subscription or workspace links to one API organization, and an organization can hold only one active link.
- Teammates get nothing automatically. A ChatGPT seat doesn't give anyone API access.
- Rate limits still apply. Credits aren't a higher tier.
- It can go away. OpenAI says the benefit "may change or be removed in the future."
OpenAI vs Claude API credits
| OpenAI | Anthropic | |
|---|---|---|
| $100 plan | Pro 100: $100 | Max: $100 |
| $200 plan | Pro 200: $200 | Ultra: $200 |
| $500 plan | Pro 500: $500 | None sold |
| Team seats | $20 Standard, $100 Premium | $20 Standard, $100 Premium |
| Team cap | $500 a month | $500 a month |
| $20 plan | Plus: none | Pro: none |
They're the same deal at every rung they share. If you pay for one already, you don't need to switch for this. I covered Anthropic's side, including what it excludes, on my Claude API credits page.
Should you upgrade for the credit?
Only if you'd spend it. If you already pay OpenAI $100 a month in API bills, Pro 100 now pays for itself, and the ChatGPT plan is effectively free. If you have no API project, a credit you never touch is worth $0, and it shouldn't change my read on whether ChatGPT Pro is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does ChatGPT Pro include API credits?
- Yes, as of late October 2026. Pro subscribers can claim monthly OpenAI API credits equal to their plan price: $100 on Pro 100, $200 on Pro 200 and $500 on Pro 500. You have to claim it once and link an API organization, and your subscription must have been active for at least 7 days.
- Does ChatGPT Plus include API credits?
- No. OpenAI says Plus and free trials do not qualify. Eligible plans are Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and eligible Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats. Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not listed as eligible.
- How much in API credits does ChatGPT Business get?
- $20 per paid Standard seat plus $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled for the workspace and capped at $500 a month. The cap arrives at 25 Standard seats or 5 Premium seats. Workspaces billed annually upfront get a full-year grant at once, capped at $6,000.
- Do OpenAI API credits roll over?
- No. Monthly grants expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle, and unused credits do not roll over. Your first grant is also prorated for the time left in the billing period, so the first month may be smaller than the full amount.
- Are API credits the same as ChatGPT credits?
- No. ChatGPT usage credits extend what you can do inside ChatGPT and Codex when you sign in. API credits pay for apps and agents you build on the OpenAI API. OpenAI says these API credits do not raise your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits, and they do not cover Codex through API keys.

Claude Ultra Plan: Max 20x Got a New Name and 10x Weekly Usage. What $200 Buys Now
Anthropic renamed Claude Max 20x to Ultra. It's still $200 a month, with no 5-hour limit on verified accounts and 10x Pro's usage every week. Here's what that does to the math against Max, and how to check if your account is verified.

ChatGPT Plus vs Business, as of September 2026: Plus is $20 a month for one person and OpenAI may train on your chats unless you opt out; Business is $20 a seat billed annually or $25 monthly, two seats minimum, with no training by default, admin controls, shared projects for groups, and the Company Knowledge plugin. ChatGPT for customer service, as of September 2026: it drafts replies, answers policy questions from your own documents, and triages an inbox for $20 to $25 a seat a month on ChatGPT Business. It can't look up an order, issue a refund, or remember a customer unless you connect the system that holds them. ChatGPT Pulse, the daily research cards OpenAI previewed for Pro users in September 2025, was sunset on June 17, 2026 with a 14-day wind-down. What it did, which plans ever had it, why scheduled tasks replaced it, and how an owner rebuilds the morning brief on a Plus or Business seat without handing ChatGPT the wrong things.
