Claude API Credits (2026): The New Monthly Credit on Max and Team, How to Claim It, and What It Buys

As of October 2026, Claude Max and Team plans include a monthly Claude API credit: $100 a month on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, and on Team $20 per Standard seat plus $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one monthly balance and capped at $500. You claim it on claude.ai by linking a Claude Console organization, after seven days on the plan. It pays for API calls, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, not interactive Claude Code. Unused credit expires each month. Free, Pro and Enterprise don't get it.

Anthropic buried the most useful price change of the month in the last section of a model launch. On October 7, 2026, under the Haiku 5.5 announcement, it said Max and Team subscribers would start getting monthly API credit "this week."

That turns a chat subscription into a small build budget. Here's who gets what, how to claim it, the catch, and what $100 to $500 a month actually buys at today's rates.

Who gets Claude API credits, and how much?

Plan Monthly API credit
Max 5x ($100/month) $100
Max 20x ($200/month) $200
Team, Standard seat $20 per seat
Team, Premium seat $100 per seat
Discounted Team (Nonprofit, Scientists) Same: $20 per Standard, $100 per Premium
Free, Pro, Enterprise Not eligible

On Team, every seat's credit goes into one pool, capped at $500 a month. Here's how the pool works out for a few common team shapes:

Team Monthly credit
2 Standard seats (the minimum) $40
5 Standard $100
10 Standard $200
3 Standard + 2 Premium (Anthropic's own example) $260
25 Standard $500 (cap reached)
30 Standard, or 5 Premium + anything $500 (capped)

Read the cap as a size signal. Up to about 25 people the credit grows with the team. Past that, every extra seat adds zero API credit, so a 60-person team gets the same $500 as a 25-person one. Seat prices and what Team includes beyond this are in my Claude Team plan breakdown.

How do you claim the credit?

  1. Wait seven days on the plan. New Max or Team subscribers can claim after a week.
  2. Use the right login. On Max, the subscriber claims. On Team, an Owner or Primary Owner does. In the Console organization you need the Owner, Admin or Billing role.
  3. On claude.ai in a browser: Settings > Billing (Max) or Organization settings > Billing (Team), then "Link organization" in the API credits section.
  4. Pick the Console organization, or create one in the same flow. No card is needed.

The one decision to think about: you can link only one Console organization, and you can't change it yourself afterward. Support has to do it. So link the organization you'll actually build in, not a test account you made two years ago.

What the credit covers, and the Claude Code catch

Covered: the Claude API (Messages and Message Batches), the Playground in the Claude Console, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. Any model.

Not covered: interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or web; extra usage after you hit your plan's limits in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork; and Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry.

That first line is the one people will trip on. If you hit your Max limit in Claude Code, this credit does not keep you going. It's for things you build: a script, an internal tool, an agent that runs on a schedule. Your plan limits don't change either way.

What does $100 to $500 a month actually buy?

Rate-card math on three jobs a small business might actually run, using Anthropic's prices as of October 8, 2026 (no caching, so real costs run a bit lower):

Monthly job Haiku 5.5 Sonnet 5.5 Opus 5.5
Triage 20,000 support tickets (1,500 tokens in, 300 out each) $6 $120 $240
Summarize 400 sales calls (12,000 in, 800 out each) $0.64 $12.80 $25.60
Research 3,000 inbound leads with an agent (20,000 in, 2,000 out each) $9 $180 $360

On Haiku 5.5, all three jobs together cost about $16 a month, inside even the $40 credit of a two-seat Team. On Sonnet 5.5 the same three come to about $313, which a 10-seat Team's $200 doesn't cover and a $500 pool does. The model you pick decides whether the credit is a rounding error or the whole budget. Haiku 5.5's pricing, including the 100,000-token line that changes these numbers for long documents, is in Claude Haiku 5.5.

For scale, my own setup: I pay for Claude Max at $200 a month, and separately run the Claude API at about $20 a month for citation checks and site drafts. In my words from September: "It ran dry on Wednesday and I found out because a script told me." On Max 20x, the new $200 credit is ten times that API bill.

What happens when the credit runs out?

This is the part to set up before you build anything that matters:

  • If the organization has purchased credits or auto-reload, usage carries on and draws from those. The monthly credit is always spent first.
  • If it doesn't, "API requests stop until your next monthly credits arrive." Nothing is ever charged to your Claude plan.
  • Unused credit doesn't roll over. It expires at the end of each billing cycle, and annual plans still get it monthly.
  • Everyone with an API key in the linked organization draws from the same balance. Set workspace spend limits in the Console if more than one person or project uses it.

A hard stop is fine for an experiment and bad for anything a customer touches. If a workflow your business depends on runs on this credit, either add a small purchased balance as a backstop or have something alert you when it gets low.

Other ways to get Claude API credits

  • Buy them. In the Claude Console, with auto-reload if you want usage to continue without a stop. Per-token rates for every model are in Anthropic API pricing.
  • The new-account test credit. Anthropic says new API users get a small amount of free credit to try the API. It doesn't publish the amount on its pricing page, so I won't guess one.
  • Claude Startups. Expanded October 6, 2026: a one-time $1,000 API credit, plus a free year of Claude Team with up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team. Startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two can apply.
  • A Max or Team plan. The monthly credit above. If you were going to pay for Max or Team anyway, this is the cheapest API budget you'll ever get.

Is it worth upgrading just for the credit?

Usually not. Max 5x is $100 a month and returns $100 of API credit, which sounds like a free plan until you notice you'd be paying $100 for a credit that disappears if you don't use it that month. Upgrade for the plan's usage limits. Treat the credit as a bonus that funds small builds you'd otherwise never get around to. The full plan-by-plan picture is in Claude AI pricing.

For a team, the credit changes one thing worth acting on: the first internal tool now has a budget. If you'd rather have that set up properly, connected to the systems your business runs on, that's my Claude for Small Business install: from $4,500, about two weeks, roughly three hours of your time. Claude seats are paid to Anthropic separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Claude Max include API credits?
Yes, as of October 2026. Anthropic now gives Max subscribers a monthly credit for the Claude API: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x. You claim it once by linking a Claude Console organization from Settings > Billing on claude.ai, after seven days on the plan. Credits refresh each billing cycle and don't roll over.
How much API credit does the Claude Team plan include?
$20 a month per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance and capped at $500 a month. Anthropic's example: three Standard and two Premium seats get $260. A 10-person team on Standard seats gets $200; at 25 Standard seats you hit the $500 cap. One Owner or Primary Owner links a Console organization and claims it for the whole team.
Can I use the Claude API credits for Claude Code?
Not for interactive Claude Code. Anthropic's help center says the monthly credits don't apply to Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, or to extra usage once you hit plan limits. They cover the Claude API (Messages and Message Batches), the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. Claude Code usage still comes out of your plan's limits.
Do Claude API credits roll over?
The monthly plan credits don't. Unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle, and new credit arrives shortly after your plan payment goes through (monthly, even on annual plans). They're spent before any credits you bought. If the balance runs out and you have no purchased credits or auto-reload, API requests stop until next month's credits arrive.
How do I get free Claude API credits?
Four routes as of October 2026: new API accounts get a small amount of free credit to test with; Max and Team subscribers get the monthly credit ($100 to $500 depending on plan and seats); startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two can apply to Claude Startups for a one-time $1,000 API credit plus a free year of Claude Team; and everyone else buys credits in the Claude Console, with optional auto-reload.
Are Free and Pro users eligible for the monthly API credit?
No. Anthropic lists Max and Team plans, including discounted Team plans for nonprofits and scientists, as eligible. Free, Pro and Enterprise are not. Enterprise already bills usage at API rates on top of seats.
