ChatGPT for Excel (2026): What It Does, Who Gets It, and What a Month of Spreadsheets Costs
The short answer
ChatGPT for Excel is OpenAI's official add-in that puts ChatGPT in a side panel inside your workbook. As of October 30, 2026 it's available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and it works in Google Sheets too. It builds sheets, writes and explains formulas and answers questions across tabs. A typical task uses 5 to 20 credits a message, so your plan's allowance decides how far it goes.
You've been promised "AI that does your spreadsheets" for three years now. Mostly that meant pasting a table into a chat window and pasting a formula back. This one actually sits in the workbook, which is a real change. It's also the fastest way yet to get a confident wrong number into a board deck, so the review habit at the end of this post is the part that matters.
What it actually does
From OpenAI's product page, in plain terms:
- Builds a sheet from a description. "A 12-month cash flow forecast with these three revenue lines" gets you a formatted sheet with formulas in it.
- Edits what you have. It adds and changes formulas and updates sheets while you watch.
- Answers questions across tabs, like which customer's margin dropped the most this quarter.
- Explains and fixes. It'll tell you what a formula someone else wrote is doing, and look for errors.
OpenAI also says it links its answers to the cells it used, keeps your existing formulas and formatting, asks permission before making changes, and lets you revert. Those last ones are why this is different from a chat window. Finance teams get extras: OpenAI lists data connections for FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Daloopa and S&P Global.
Who gets it
OpenAI launched it as a beta and made ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets generally available across all plans on May 5, 2026. Its install page lists Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers and K-12, plus Free, Go, Plus and Pro. You install it from chatgpt.com/apps/spreadsheets and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
If you're on a company plan, check with whoever runs your Microsoft 365 or Google admin settings first. Add-ins are often blocked by default, and that's a fine thing to have blocked until someone decides on purpose.
What a month of spreadsheets costs
Here's the part nobody prints. The add-in isn't priced on its own. OpenAI's rate card says a typical ChatGPT for Excel or Sheets task may use 5 to 20 credits per message, and it draws on the same usage pool as ChatGPT Work and Codex. On a plan with an allowance, that comes out of your allowance first. After that, you can buy credits, which work out to about 4 cents each.
| Messages a month | At 5 credits | At 20 credits | If you had to buy them all |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 (one monthly report) | 50 credits | 200 credits | $2 to $8 |
| 40 (a weekly report and some cleanup) | 200 credits | 800 credits | $8 to $32 |
| 100 (a heavy finance month) | 500 credits | 2,000 credits | $20 to $80 |
The last column is the worst case: it assumes your allowance is already gone. So for most owners the question isn't cost. It's whether heavy spreadsheet use eats the same allowance you need for Work or Codex. The details are on ChatGPT credits, and if you're running into caps generally, ChatGPT usage limits shows how the plans compare.
ChatGPT for Excel vs Claude and Copilot
All three vendors now have an Excel add-in, and they all do the core job. So skip the feature war. The useful question is which seat your team already pays for.
- Your team is on ChatGPT: start here. It's already included.
- Your team is on Claude: Claude for Excel is the same idea, on Claude's paid plans.
- You run on Microsoft 365 with Copilot licenses: Copilot in Excel is built in, and it needs your file saved with AutoSave on.
Paying for a second AI subscription to get a slightly better spreadsheet add-in is almost never the right call. If you want to compare, run the same real workbook through both before you spend anything.
How to check its work
The risk isn't that it fails. It's that it finishes, and the sheet looks right. Before any AI-edited number leaves your building:
- Work on a copy. Every time, until you've done this a dozen times.
- Ask for a change list. "List every cell you changed and why." Then check them against the links it gives you.
- Check one total by hand. Pick a number you already know, like last month's revenue, and confirm it matches.
- Read the formula, not the result, on anything that goes to a bank, a board or a tax preparer.
Client and payroll spreadsheets need a decision before anyone opens the add-in: which account, on which plan, with what data. On a personal plan, check your data controls first. That's a smaller decision than it sounds, and it's part of what I set up in an AI implementation.
Today's micro-action
Make a copy of the spreadsheet you dread most each month. Install the add-in, open the copy and type: "Explain what this workbook does, and list anything that looks wrong." You'll learn more from those two minutes than from any demo.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is ChatGPT for Excel free?
- The add-in is free to install, and as of October 30, 2026 OpenAI lists it for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro as well as Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers and K-12. What you can do is limited by your plan's usage. A typical Excel or Sheets task uses 5 to 20 credits a message from your agentic allowance.
- What can ChatGPT for Excel do?
- It builds formatted spreadsheets from a description, adds and edits formulas, answers questions across tabs, explains formulas and finds errors. OpenAI says it links answers to the cells it used, keeps your formulas and formatting, and asks permission before it makes changes.
- Does ChatGPT work in Google Sheets?
- Yes. ChatGPT for Google Sheets became generally available with the Excel add-in on May 5, 2026, and it's installed from the same OpenAI page.
- How much does ChatGPT for Excel cost in credits?
- OpenAI says a typical task may use 5 to 20 credits a message. At about 4 cents a credit, that's 20 to 80 cents a message if you've used up your allowance and buy more. Forty messages a month would be 200 to 800 credits, or $8 to $32.
- Is ChatGPT for Excel better than Claude for Excel or Copilot?
- For most companies the deciding factor is which plan they already pay for. If your team is on ChatGPT, use this one. If you're on Claude, use Claude for Excel. If you run on Microsoft 365 and own Copilot, start there. Test all of them on the same real workbook before you pay for a second one.
