Grok vs ChatGPT (2026): Prices, Limits and Team Plans After The X Subscription

The short answer

As of October 16, 2026, Grok and ChatGPT both have a free tier and an $8 tier, then split: ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, and Grok's recommended tier, Premium, is $30 and bundles Cursor and X Premium. Both top out at $200 for individuals. For a team, ChatGPT Business is cheaper per seat ($20 billed annually) than Grok Teams (from $30). So the real question isn't which chatbot is cheaper. It's whether you'd use the coding editor and the X perks that come inside Grok's price.

Grok's prices changed on October 12, when x.ai replaced the SuperGrok ladder with The X Subscription, one plan that covers Grok, Cursor and X. Most Grok-vs-ChatGPT tables you'll find still show the old SuperGrok prices. Every number below comes from x.ai's and OpenAI's own pricing pages, read today.

Grok vs ChatGPT plans, side by side

Price a month Grok (The X Subscription) ChatGPT
$0 Free: limited chat and agent requests Free
$8 Plus: Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, Grok API access, Cursor (Grok models only), X Premium checkmark Go: higher limits than Free, lightweight Codex; ads may still appear
$20 no tier Plus: no ads, Codex, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, buy credits past the limit
$30 Premium: 4x Plus usage, latest Grok models, Grok Bot, video, cloud agents and code reviews in Cursor, ad-free X on most surfaces no tier
$100 Super: 15x Plus, priority at peak times Pro $100: no five-hour limit
$200 Ultra: 50x Plus, earliest access to new models Pro $200
$500 no tier Pro $500: adds Ultrafast mode
Per seat Teams: from $30 a user Business: $20 a user billed annually, $25 monthly (2+ users)

x.ai's own advice is Premium for new AI users and Plus "for social creators with limited AI usage," which tells you what the $8 tier is really for: it's mostly an X Premium subscription with some Grok attached. If you were on a SuperGrok plan before October 12, you keep it. The old prices next to the new ones are on SuperGrok pricing.

What you're actually paying for at $30 vs $20

This is the comparison most people are making. ChatGPT Plus at $20 is a chat assistant plus Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Grok Premium at $30 is three products: Grok, the Cursor code editor, and X Premium (ad-free scrolling on most surfaces, a preferred handle, a bigger reply boost). When x.ai launched it, it put the three bought separately at $90 a month.

That makes the decision simple:

  • You'd use all three: Grok Premium is the better deal. You'd otherwise pay for an editor and X Premium on top of a chat subscription.
  • You only want the chat assistant: you're paying $10 more a month for Grok, for two products you won't open. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Gemini's AI Pro all sit at about $20. Whether Grok's assistant alone is worth the premium is the question is Grok worth it answers.
  • You want Claude or GPT inside Cursor: Premium lets you, but that model usage is billed on top at API list prices and doesn't come out of your plan. On Plus, Cursor runs Grok models only. The tier-by-tier detail is on Cursor pricing.

How each one meters usage

The two vendors limit you in different ways, and the difference matters more than the sticker price once you use either one daily.

Grok: one usage pool, shared between Grok (chat, Imagine, Voice and Grok Bot) and Cursor, that refreshes weekly. x.ai states the tiers as multiples: Premium gets 4x Plus, Super 15x, Ultra 50x. It doesn't say what Plus itself buys, so there's no number to plan against. A heavy week of coding in Cursor comes out of the same allowance as your Grok chats. When you run out, you can buy top-ups or wait for the refresh. The Grok API is "included" on paid plans only in the sense that you get access; API calls are billed separately at model rates. More on the missing numbers in Grok usage limits.

ChatGPT: OpenAI publishes estimate ranges per five-hour window for Plus and Standard Business seats, by model. For example, 15 to 160 local messages on GPT-6.1 Sol and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna in Codex. It also says weekly limits may apply, and that the Pro plans have no five-hour limit. Plus and Pro users who hit a limit can buy credits instead of upgrading. The full table, plan by plan, is on ChatGPT usage limits.

Neither is a fixed message count, and both vendors say usage depends on the model and the task. But ChatGPT gives you a range you can check against, and Grok gives you a ratio. If you need to predict whether a plan will last a working week, that's a real point for ChatGPT.

The $8 tiers: Grok Plus vs ChatGPT Go

Same price, different jobs. Grok Plus is mostly X Premium (the checkmark, fewer timeline ads, creator tools, analytics) plus Grok on the "Basic" usage pool, Grok API access and Grok-only Cursor. ChatGPT Go is a cheaper ChatGPT: more messages, uploads and images than Free, and lightweight Codex. One catch on Go: OpenAI says ads may appear for Free and Go users, and the ad-free line starts at Plus. What Go does and doesn't include is on is ChatGPT Go worth it, and the two free tiers are compared on is Grok free.

What a team pays: Grok Teams vs ChatGPT Business

For a business, the comparison is per seat and per year:

Seats ChatGPT Business (annual) ChatGPT Business (monthly) Grok Teams (from $30)
5 $1,200 a year $1,500 a year from $1,800 a year
10 $2,400 a year $3,000 a year from $3,600 a year
25 $6,000 a year $7,500 a year from $9,000 a year

ChatGPT Business needs at least 2 users and includes SAML SSO, MFA and, in OpenAI's words, "no training on your business data by default." Grok Teams lists central billing, usage analytics, team-wide privacy settings, custom chat data retention, SAML or OIDC SSO, and mixing seat types (its usage runs 4x to 50x Plus depending on the seat). Grok Teams seats also include Cursor, which matters if some of the team writes code. Invoice billing, SCIM and audit logs are Enterprise-only on Grok. Seat-by-seat detail for OpenAI's plan is on ChatGPT Business pricing.

One thing that has nothing to do with price: if your company's buyers live on Free or Go ChatGPT accounts, ChatGPT is also an ad channel now. If they're on paid seats, they never see ads. That's on ChatGPT ads cost.

Which one should you pay for?

  • You post on X and code in Cursor: Grok Premium at $30. It replaces subscriptions you'd buy anyway.
  • You want one assistant for writing, research and analysis: ChatGPT Plus at $20, with usage ranges you can plan against. Or run both free tiers for a week first.
  • You're buying for a team of 5 to 25: ChatGPT Business is the lower seat price and the clearer data terms, unless the team codes in Cursor every day.
  • You hit limits every day: compare $100 to $100. ChatGPT Pro removes the five-hour limit; Grok Super gives 15x Plus with no base number.

Neither vendor publishes a head-to-head on answer quality, and both ship new models every few weeks, so I won't hand you a "which is smarter" score that's stale by November. Both have free tiers. Run your five most common real tasks through both on the same day, then pick from the prices above.

For a team, the subscription is the cheap part. The cost is deciding what the tool may touch, what people use it for, and how you'd know it's working. When a company wants that set up properly around the plan it chose, that's the AI implementation work I do, at a published price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grok cheaper than ChatGPT?
At the bottom, no: both have a free tier and an $8 tier (Grok Plus, ChatGPT Go). In the middle, ChatGPT is cheaper: Plus is $20 a month, while Grok's recommended tier, Premium, is $30. At the top they match at $100 and $200. Grok's $30 also includes Cursor and X Premium, so it's only the more expensive option if you wouldn't use those.
What does Grok's $8 Plus plan include compared with ChatGPT Go?
As of October 16, 2026, Grok Plus includes Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, Grok API access, Cursor with Grok models only, and X's Premium checkmark, all on x.ai's "Basic" usage pool. ChatGPT Go is $8 for higher limits than Free and lightweight Codex use. OpenAI says ads may still appear on Go; the ad-free line starts at Plus.
How do Grok and ChatGPT usage limits compare?
Grok puts Grok and Cursor on one shared pool that refreshes weekly, and states each tier only as a multiple of Plus (Premium 4x, Super 15x, Ultra 50x) without saying what Plus itself buys. ChatGPT publishes estimate ranges per five-hour window for Plus and Business, for example 15 to 160 local messages on GPT-6.1 Sol, says weekly limits may also apply, and removes the five-hour limit on Pro.
Which is better for a business team, Grok or ChatGPT?
On published terms, ChatGPT Business: $20 a user a month billed annually ($25 monthly), SAML SSO, and no training on business data by default. Grok Teams starts at $30 a user a month and adds central billing, usage analytics, team-wide privacy settings and SSO. For 10 people that's $2,400 a year on ChatGPT Business (annual) against at least $3,600 on Grok Teams.
Can I use ChatGPT or Claude models inside Grok's plan?
Only in Cursor, and not inside the plan's allowance. x.ai's pricing page says self-serve plans include no allowance for third-party models; Claude and GPT models are available in Cursor from Premium up and are billed separately at API list prices. On Plus, Cursor runs Grok models only.
Is Grok or ChatGPT smarter?
Neither vendor publishes a head-to-head, and both ship new models every few weeks, so any single ranking goes stale fast. The practical test is cheap: both have a free tier. Run your five most common real tasks through both on the same day and compare the answers, then pick the plan from the price and limits above.
