ChatGPT Plus vs Pro (2026): $20 or $100, and the $80 Break-Even Nobody Mentions

TL;DR: ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Pro now starts at $100, with $200 and $500 tiers above it, as of November 3, 2026. OpenAI won't tell you how much more usage Pro buys. It does tell you two things that settle it for most people: Plus stops you every five hours in Work and Codex and Pro doesn't, and every Pro tier hands back its own price in API credits that Plus never gets. So if you spend $80 or more a month on the OpenAI API, Pro 100 is the cheaper plan. If you don't, and you rarely hit the cap, stay on Plus.

Most "Plus vs Pro" articles still compare $20 to a single $200 plan. That plan stopped being the only Pro in September, and the cut OpenAI announced for it was canceled on October 29. Here's the current lineup, every number from OpenAI's own pages read this morning.

Plus vs Pro, side by side

Plus Pro 100 Pro 200 Pro 500
Price $20/mo $100/mo $200/mo $500/mo
Five-hour window in Work and Codex Yes (e.g. 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages) None None None
Weekly allowance Weekly limits may apply Yes, doubled 10/29 More than Pro 100 Highest
GPT-6 Pro in Chat No Yes Yes Yes
Monthly API credits None $100 $200 $500
Ultrafast mode No No No Yes
Dot (always-on agent) No Yes Yes Yes
Context, GPT Instant 54K (~40 pages in) 128K (~250 pages in)
Context, reasoning 256K (~320 pages in) 400K (~680 pages in)
Billing Monthly Monthly only, no annual option

The full price list for every plan, including Go at $8 and the Business seats, is on ChatGPT pricing.

What OpenAI doesn't publish: the usage multiple

This is the number everyone wants, and it isn't on any OpenAI page. The pricing page says Pro's Codex access is "Expanded." The help center says "Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100" and that Pro 100 and Pro 500 got twice their previous Work and Codex allowance in late October. It never says Pro 100 is 5x Plus or 20x Plus.

Compare that with Anthropic. Its pricing page prints the multiple on every tier: Claude Max at $100 is "5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week," and Ultra at $200 is "10x Pro usage every week." If you're picking between the two vendors' $100 plans, that's the one real difference in how they sell: Anthropic tells you what you're buying, OpenAI tells you to check Settings, then Usage.

So treat any article quoting "Pro gives you 10x Plus" as a guess. The only Plus numbers OpenAI prints are the five-hour ranges below, and it calls even those estimates.

The five-hour window is the difference you'll feel

On Plus, Work and Codex run on a five-hour window plus a weekly allowance. OpenAI's own estimate of local messages per five hours on Plus:

  • GPT-6 Astra: 5 to 45
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: 15 to 160
  • GPT-6.1 Terra: 35 to 285
  • GPT-6 Luna: 350 to 3,000

The range is wide because a big file or a long agent task eats the allowance much faster than a short question. If you work in short bursts, you'll rarely see the wall. If you hand Codex or Work a two-hour job on Astra, 5 messages can be the whole window, and you wait.

Pro 100, 200 and 500 have no five-hour limit at all right now. You still have a weekly allowance, but you can spend it in one long afternoon. For someone who runs long jobs, that alone is the upgrade. Everything else on the table is a bonus. If you've already hit the cap and want to know exactly when it resets, ChatGPT usage limits has every window by plan.

The $80 break-even: when Pro 100 costs less than Plus

Here's the part nobody lines up. Every Pro tier comes with monthly OpenAI API credits equal to its price: $100 on Pro 100, $200 on Pro 200, $500 on Pro 500. Plus gets nothing. OpenAI's help article says so in one line: "Plus, free trials subscriptions do not qualify."

So the real gap between Plus and Pro 100 isn't $80 for everyone. It depends on what you already spend on the API:

Your OpenAI API bill Plus + API Pro 100 (credits cover the API) Cheaper
$0 $20 $100 Plus by $80
$30 (a small support bot) $50 $100 Plus by $50
$80 $100 $100 Even
$100 $120 $100 Pro 100 by $20
$150 $170 $150 ($100 + $50 over) Pro 100 by $20

Past $80 a month, Pro 100 wins, and you get the bigger ChatGPT plan thrown in. The catches: the credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, the first month is prorated, and one subscription links to one API organization that you have to own. The full rules are on OpenAI API credits.

The same math runs up the ladder. Pro 200 costs $100 more than Pro 100 and returns $100 more in credits, so if you'd spend the extra $100 on the API anyway, the larger allowance is free. That's a strange pricing shape, and it's the reason "Is Pro worth it?" now has a different answer for anyone who builds with the API.

ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max: the $100 plans

About 200 to 500 people a month search this one. At $100 each, both now include $100 a month in API credits on their own platforms. The differences that matter:

  • Published usage: Claude Max is 5x Claude Pro every five hours and every week. ChatGPT Pro 100 publishes no multiple, but it has no five-hour window.
  • Five-hour cap: Claude Max keeps one (at 5x). ChatGPT Pro has none. Claude's no-five-hour plan is Ultra at $200.
  • Where the credits work: OpenAI's API vs Anthropic's. Pick the plan whose API you already pay for.

If you write all day, I'd pick on the model you like better. If you run long agent jobs, the missing five-hour window on ChatGPT Pro 100 is worth more than the published multiple on Claude Max.

Who should buy which

  • Stay on Plus if you chat, write and research, rarely see a usage message, and don't pay for the API.
  • Pro 100 if Codex or Work stops you mid-task more than once a week, or your API bill is near $80 a month.
  • Pro 200 if you've worn through Pro 100's weekly allowance, or your API bill is near $200.
  • Pro 500 only if you need Ultrafast, which burns allowance at 8x the normal rate, so it's for people whose time costs more than the tokens.

Pro is billed monthly only, so the cheap test is one month of Pro 100 in your busiest week, then Settings, then Usage to see what you actually used. My longer take on who needs the expensive tiers is on Is ChatGPT Pro worth it?

For a team, the answer is usually neither

Plus and Pro are personal plans. If five people at your company each expense a Plus account, nobody owns the data, nobody can turn a person off when they leave, and nobody gets the pooled credits Business seats earn. The usual right shape for a small business is Business seats for the team, and maybe one Pro for the person who lives in Codex. If you want that set up properly in a day, that's what ChatGPT Business setup is.

The micro-action for today

Open Settings, then Usage in ChatGPT, and look at last week. Then open your OpenAI API billing page and look at last month. If the first shows you hitting the window and the second is over $80, switch to Pro 100 this month. If neither, keep your $80.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Pro?
As of November 3, 2026, Plus is $20 a month and Pro is $100, $200 or $500. Pro removes the five-hour usage window in Work and Codex, adds GPT-6 Pro in Chat, Dot, bigger context (128K vs 54K on Instant, 400K vs 256K on reasoning) and monthly API credits equal to its price. Plus gets no API credits.
How much more usage does ChatGPT Pro give than Plus?
OpenAI doesn't publish a multiple. Its pricing page says Pro has expanded Codex and model access, and its help center says Pro 200 has more usage than Pro 100 and that Pro has no five-hour limit. Anthropic, by contrast, prints Max as 5x Pro and Ultra as 10x Pro on claude.com/pricing.
Is ChatGPT Pro 100 worth it over Plus?
Only if you hit the Plus five-hour cap often or you use the OpenAI API. Pro 100 costs $80 more than Plus and includes up to $100 a month in API credits that expire each billing cycle. If you already spend $80 or more a month on the API, Pro 100 costs you less than Plus plus that bill.
Does ChatGPT Plus include API credits?
No. OpenAI's help article says Plus and free trials don't qualify. The monthly credits go to Pro 100 ($100), Pro 200 ($200), Pro 500 ($500) and paid Business seats. Downgrading from Pro to Plus removes the API organization link at the end of the billing cycle.
Can I pay for ChatGPT Pro annually?
No. OpenAI's help center says Pro is billed monthly only, with no annual billing or paying months in advance. That makes it easy to try for one busy month and drop back to Plus.
Should a business buy ChatGPT Pro for its team?
Usually not. Pro is a personal plan. A team that needs shared admin, data controls and pooled credits belongs on ChatGPT Business, where Standard and Premium seats also earn API credits. Pro makes sense for one heavy user, often the owner or a developer, on top of the team's seats.
