NotebookLM Pricing (2026): What Gemini Notebook Costs on Free, Plus, Pro, and Ultra, and What Each Plan's Limits Actually Buy

NotebookLM pricing: the short answer

NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. Google renamed it on July 16, 2026, and it has no price of its own anymore: it is free with a Google account, and its higher limits come with Google's AI plans, Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro at $19.99, and Google AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99, as of September 16, 2026. If your business pays for Google Workspace, Google says Gemini Notebook is already included in every Workspace plan, with business data terms a personal account does not get. The limits by plan below are from Google's own help center, and the part most pricing pages have not caught up with is that since September 2, 2026 those limits sit inside a usage meter that refreshes every five hours.

What happened to NotebookLM

On July 16, 2026, Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. Google's announcement calls it "the same standalone product," now doing more across Google: notebooks sync with the Gemini app, they are coming to AI Mode in Search, and every notebook is getting a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code against your sources. That code feature was available first to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access, and is rolling out to Pro users on the web. Google's post puts usage at more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organizations.

For pricing, the rename matters for one reason: search results and older guides still describe NotebookLM Plus as a separate upgrade. On Google's pages today the upgrade path is a Google AI plan, a qualifying Workspace plan, or Google Cloud.

Plan prices are from gemini.google/subscriptions; the Workspace and Cloud rows from Google's Workspace product page and help center. Google's pages do not publish a NotebookLM-only subscription.

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes, and the free tier is generous for one person. Google's help center lists the free Standard tier at 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chat questions a day, 3 Audio Overviews and 3 Video Overviews a day, 10 each of reports, flashcards, quizzes, and mind maps a day, and 10 Deep Research runs a month. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB, per Google's Workspace page. What the free tier does not give you is volume: a person building training material or research for a whole team will hit 50 chats and 3 Audio Overviews in a morning.

Gemini Notebook limits by plan

Google lists the two Ultra columns by storage plan; its subscriptions page prices Ultra at $99.99 and $199.99 a month. Watermark removal does not apply in India, South Korea, or Vietnam. Advanced sharing is for paid users; custom chat styles and analytics are available to everyone.

The new usage meter: why the table is not the whole story

From September 2, 2026, Google says Gemini Notebook uses compute-based usage limits. How much you can do depends on the complexity of the prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of the chat. The quota refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. Against the free Standard tier, Google lists AI Plus at two times the usage, AI Pro at four times, and AI Ultra at five or twenty times AI Pro. When you run out on the web, a "Generate later" option in the Studio panel queues the output, which Google says may take a couple of hours.

In practice: a long chat on the most capable model burns the meter far faster than a short question. The daily counts in the table are ceilings, and the meter decides how close you get. This is the same meter Google put on the Gemini app, walked through plan by plan on Gemini usage limits.

Is Gemini Notebook Pro worth $19.99?

You cannot buy it alone. Gemini Notebook in Pro comes with Google AI Pro, so the question is whether the whole bundle is worth $19.99: the Gemini app at four times the free usage, 5 TB of storage, and the rest. For a person who lives in Google's apps, often yes, and the full verdict is on is Google AI Pro worth it. For Gemini Notebook alone, Pro is worth it when the free tier's 50 sources or 3 Audio Overviews a day are the wall you hit every week. Plus, at $4.99, doubles the free limits and is the cheaper fix if the wall is notebooks or sources rather than Deep Research.

What a business should buy (usually nothing new)

The mistake I see in owner-led businesses is an employee buying Google AI Pro on a personal account to get past a limit, then uploading client contracts to it. Google's help center draws the line clearly: on a personal account, data is not used to train Gemini Notebook unless you give feedback, and feedback can be reviewed with the full context. On a Google Workspace account, uploads, queries, and responses are not reviewed by humans and not used to train AI models. Google's Workspace page says Gemini Notebook is included in all Workspace plans.

• On Google Workspace already: use Gemini Notebook through Workspace accounts. Buy a personal Google AI plan for nobody who handles client documents.
• Not on Workspace: pick your main assistant suite first. If the business runs on Claude, a Claude Team seat is $20 billed annually and its Projects cover most "ask my documents" work (see the Claude Team plan); how the two suites compare for a small team is on Claude vs Gemini.
• Regulated or enterprise data: Google's Cloud path adds VPC Service Controls and IAM controls, with files kept in your Google Cloud project. That is a procurement conversation, not a $19.99 decision.

What to do this week

1. Check which account your team is using. Open Gemini Notebook and look at the profile. Client documents in a personal Gmail notebook are the thing to fix first.
2. Run one real job on the free or Workspace tier before buying anything: your SOPs as sources, and an Audio Overview for new hires. If you hit the limit weekly, then price Plus or Pro.
3. Write down which documents never go into any AI tool, whichever vendor you pick.
