The free tier is real and it's useful. It's also designed to push you to Pro the moment Claude becomes part of how you actually work. Here's the honest breakdown of what each plan costs, what you get, and which one fits which kind of user.

What you actually get on the free tier

The free tier is more generous than people assume. As of June 2026, you get:

• Claude Sonnet 4.6 — Anthropic's mid-tier model and the same one most Pro users default to. You're not getting a watered-down version. You're getting the same model with tighter usage caps.
• Web app access at claude.ai — no credit card, no trial expiration. Sign up with email or Google.
• ~30 messages every 3 hours — Anthropic doesn't publish exact numbers and the limit fluctuates based on server load and message length. A long message with attachments counts heavier than a short one.
• File uploads — PDFs, images, spreadsheets, code files. Capped at smaller sizes than Pro.
• Standard data privacy — your conversations may be used to improve Claude unless you opt out in settings.

What you do not get on free:

• No Projects (saved system instructions + reference docs)
• No Skills (reusable workflows)
• No extended thinking mode
• No Claude Cowork (the agentic workspace where Claude can run multi-step tasks)
• No business connectors — no QuickBooks, HubSpot, Google Drive integration
• No iOS or desktop apps in most cases
• No team admin, no audit trails, no SSO
• No Opus 4.7 — the higher-reasoning model is Pro-only

When the free tier breaks down

Free works fine if you're using Claude to draft an email or rewrite a paragraph. It breaks the moment Claude becomes part of how you do real work. Here are the specific walls people hit:

1. You hit rate limits mid-task. You're halfway through analyzing a contract and the "you've reached your limit, come back in 2 hours" message appears. This is the #1 reason people upgrade.
2. You want to save a Project. A Project is a persistent workspace with system instructions and reference files. If you keep pasting the same context every conversation — your brand voice, your service offerings, your client list — you need Projects. Free doesn't have them.
3. You want to use Skills. Skills are reusable workflows you can invoke by name. Pro and Team only.
4. You want business connectors. If you want Claude to read invoices from QuickBooks or contacts from HubSpot, you need at least Pro. The deeper connectors live in Team.
5. You want your team to collaborate. Free has no concept of a workspace. Two people using free Claude are working in two completely separate accounts with no shared context.

Claude Pro ($20/mo)

Pro is the plan most solo operators land on. $20/month, billed monthly or $200/year if you pay annually.

What you get over free:

• Roughly 5x the message volume
• Access to Opus 4.7 (the higher-reasoning model for hard problems)
• Projects — save system instructions, upload reference docs, get consistent output
• Skills — reusable workflows
• Extended thinking mode for complex reasoning
• Longer context windows (more file content per conversation)
• Priority access during high-load periods
• iOS, Android, and desktop apps

When Pro is enough: you're a solo founder, freelancer, or independent consultant. You use Claude daily but no one else on your team needs to share your context.

When Pro is not enough: anyone else needs to see what you've built. If you set up a great Project for client onboarding and your assistant needs the same one, you're rebuilding it in their separate Pro account. That's when Team starts making sense.

Claude Team ($25/seat/mo, 5-seat minimum)

Team is where the pricing gets interesting for small businesses. $25 per seat per month, with a 5-seat minimum. That's a $125/month floor whether you have 2 employees or 5.

The 5-seat minimum trips people up. If you're a 2-person business, you're still paying for 5 seats. You can leave the extra 3 seats unassigned, but you're paying for them.

What you get over Pro:

• Shared team workspace — Projects, Skills, and connectors are shared across the team
• Admin controls — invite/remove users, manage billing, set permissions
• Higher usage limits pooled across the team
• Contractual guarantee that your data is never used to train Claude
• Claude Cowork — the agentic workspace where Claude can run multi-step tasks across connected tools
• Claude for Small Business toggle — the new SMB-focused interface with curated connectors for QuickBooks, HubSpot, Gmail, and common SMB tools
• Centralized billing

If you want Claude for Small Business — the SMB-specific product with native connectors to common business tools — you need Team. It's not available on Pro.

For most 2–10 person businesses, Team is the plan that actually matches the way you work. The cost works out to roughly $1,500/year at the 5-seat floor, which is less than one month of most agency retainers.

Claude Enterprise

Enterprise is custom-priced and aimed at companies with 50+ employees, regulated industries, or specific compliance needs. You get SSO via SAML/Okta/etc., audit logs, advanced admin controls, larger context windows, and a dedicated account team.

If you're reading this article asking whether Claude is free, you're not the Enterprise buyer. Pro or Team is your answer.

What about the API?

The Claude API at console.anthropic.com is a completely separate product from the Pro/Team plans. It's pay-per-use, billed by the token.

As of June 2026, pricing runs roughly $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens for Sonnet 4.6, with Opus 4.7 priced higher. You pay for what you use, no monthly minimum.

The API is for developers building custom integrations — your own app, a custom workflow, an internal tool. It does not overlap with claude.ai. Your API usage doesn't unlock claude.ai Pro features, and your Pro/Team subscription doesn't give you free API credits.

If you want to give Claude access to your business systems but you don't want to write code, Team plus Cowork is the answer. If you have a developer and want to build something custom, the API is cheaper.

Which plan should you actually pick?

Honest decision guide:

• 1 person, casual use (a few questions a week): Free. Don't overthink it.
• 1 person, professional use (daily, real work): Pro at $20/mo. You'll hit the free wall in a week.
• 2–5 person team: Team at $125/mo floor. Yes, you're paying for unused seats. The shared workspace is worth it.
• 6+ person team: Team scales linearly at $25/seat/mo. A 10-person team is $250/mo.
• Need SSO, audit logs, or compliance contracts: Enterprise. Get a quote.
• Developer building a custom tool: API. Pay-per-use.

One thing worth saying out loud: there's no consumer "small business" plan between Pro and Team. You can't pay $40/month for two seats. Anthropic wants small businesses on Team, and the 5-seat minimum is how they structure that.
