Claude Ultra Plan: Max 20x Got a New Name and 10x Weekly Usage. What $200 Buys Now
Claude Ultra is the new name for Claude Max 20x. It's still $200 a month, it now comes with no 5-hour limit on verified accounts and 10x Pro's usage every week, and existing Max 20x subscribers move over automatically. The catch: per week of usage it's the same price as Pro and Max, so you're paying to remove a limit, not to get a discount.
Anthropic's help pages changed this weekend (both say updated October 31, as of my read on November 1), and the pricing page now shows four plans: Free, Pro, Max and Ultra. I couldn't find an announcement on Anthropic's news page, so this comes from the plan pages themselves.
What changed from Max 20x?
In Anthropic's words: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change."
| Pro | Max | Ultra | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| Weekly usage | 1x | 5x Pro | 10x Pro |
| 5-hour limit | Yes | Yes, 5x Pro | None on verified accounts |
| Fable models | Usage credits only | Up to half your weekly limit | Up to half your weekly limit |
| Monthly API credits | None | $100 | $200 |
The plan formerly sold as Max 5x is now just Max. The name matters because every older guide, including some of mine until today, says "Max 20x." My full Claude AI pricing breakdown covers the rest of the ladder.
Is Ultra a better deal than Max?
Not per unit. Here's the math on the weekly budget, which is now the limit that matters on Ultra.
| Plan | Price | Pro-weeks of usage | Cost per Pro-week | Fable budget, in Pro-weeks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | 1 | $20 | 0 (credits only) |
| Max | $100 | 5 | $20 | 2.5 |
| Ultra | $200 | 10 | $20 | 5 |
So the old argument that the $200 tier halves your price per unit doesn't hold on the weekly budget. Each step costs what it adds. That's how I'd frame the choice: you aren't buying cheaper Claude, you're buying a bigger week and, on Ultra, no 5-hour wall. Anthropic hasn't said what the old weekly number was, so I can't tell you whether this is a raise or a cut for existing subscribers. Watch your own usage bar this week.
The API credit can change the answer, though only if you'd spend it anyway. If you already pay $200 a month for Claude API work, Ultra's credit covers that bill and the plan is effectively paid for. Details and exclusions are on my Claude API credits page.
Who should pay for Ultra?
- Stay on Pro if you hit a limit a couple of times a week and can wait it out.
- Move to Max if you're stuck behind the 5-hour window most days. My full read is in is Claude Max worth it.
- Move to Ultra if a single long run gets cut off on Max, or you finish Max's week by Thursday.
- Skip Ultra for a team. It's an individual plan. A company should look at Team seats first, and if you're rolling this out to staff, that's the AI implementation work I do.
How does Ultra compare to ChatGPT Pro 200?
| Claude Ultra | ChatGPT Pro 200 | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $200 a month | $200 a month |
| 5-hour limit | None on verified accounts | None on Work and Codex |
| Published usage | 10x Pro every week | "More usage than Pro 100," no multiple |
| Monthly API credits | $200 | $200 |
That's the same price, the same credit and the same missing 5-hour limit, within days of each other. OpenAI also canceled its planned Pro 200 cut on October 29. If you're choosing between them, pick by which assistant does your work better. The price stopped being the tiebreaker this week.
The catches
- "No 5-hour limit" needs a verified account. Until then a temporary limit applies. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically from factors like account and payment history, and says verifying your phone at checkout doesn't remove it. To check, open Settings > Usage. No Current session bar means you're verified.
- The week still ends. Ultra has a weekly limit across all models. My Claude usage limits guide explains how the weekly reset works.
- Half for Fable isn't extra. Anthropic says your Fable use draws from the same weekly limit. Past 50%, you buy usage credits or switch models.
- Anthropic can move these. Its pages say more limits may apply to manage capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Claude Ultra plan?
- Ultra is the new name for Claude Max 20x. It costs $200 a month and includes 10 times Pro's usage every week, no 5-hour limit on verified accounts, and $200 a month in Claude API credits. Anthropic says existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change.
- Is Claude Ultra worth it over Max?
- Only if the 5-hour window is what stops you. On a weekly basis both plans cost $20 for each Pro-week of usage, so Ultra isn't a discount. It buys twice the weekly budget and removes the 5-hour limit. If you run out of the week on Max, Ultra helps. If you rarely hit a limit on Max, keep the $100.
- Does Claude Ultra have any limits?
- Yes. Ultra has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable, up to 50% of your weekly usage. Accounts that aren't verified yet also have a temporary limit. Anthropic says more limits may apply to manage capacity.
- How do I know if my Claude Ultra account is verified?
- Go to Settings > Usage. If you don't see a Current session bar, your account is verified. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically using factors like account and payment history, and says verifying your phone number at checkout doesn't remove the temporary limit.
- What happened to Claude Max 20x?
- It's now called Ultra, at the same $200. Max is now the name for the $100 plan, which keeps 5x Pro's usage every 5 hours and every week. If an older page or receipt says Max 20x, it means Ultra.
