Claude for Google Workspace (2026): Docs, Sheets and Slides Add-On, Pricing, and Whether You Still Need It With Gemini
Yes. As of October 6, 2026, Claude works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides through the Claude for Google Workspace add-on, in public beta on all paid Claude plans. It opens in a sidebar, reads the file you have open and whatever you've selected, and edits in place: fixes and suggestion cards in Docs, formulas, pivot tables and charts in Sheets, on-theme slides in Slides. Install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. The real question is whether it's worth paying for when Gemini is already on the invoice.
Every headline this week says Claude "comes to Google Docs." Cool. Your Google Workspace bill already has an AI in it, and nobody writing those headlines did the math on paying for a second one.
So let's do that. Here's what actually shipped, what it costs a 10-person team on top of Workspace as of October 2026, when Gemini is enough, and how I'd roll it out without letting a beta loose on your shared drive.
What does Claude for Google Workspace actually do?
Anthropic shipped two things on October 6, 2026, and they're easy to mix up.
The add-on. Claude sits in a sidebar next to your Doc, Sheet or deck. It sees the file and your selection, and it makes the change right there. No copy, paste, reformat, swear.
- Docs: fixes a sentence or restyles a heading without wrecking the surrounding formatting. For bigger rewrites it proposes suggestion cards that highlight the passage it wants to change, and you apply or dismiss each one.
- Sheets: writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native Sheets charts, adds tabs. For joins or data cleaning it can pull a range into Python and write the results back into the sheet. Anthropic's example is a Q3 budget vs. actuals report with a tab per team and a summary chart, built from attached source files.
- Slides: builds new slides from your deck's own layouts and themes, then checks its work and flags elements that overlap or run off the slide, or text that's hard to read.
The connectors. Separately, new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (also beta) let you start in the Claude chat and have it create or edit Google files from there. Anthropic says that makes the most sense when you need a new file or the work spans several files.
Two details matter more than the feature list. First, the sidebar carries the same models, connectors and skills as your Claude account, so a skill you saved for your weekly report works inside the Sheet too. Second, you choose how much rope it gets: "Ask before edits" is the default and shows each change as an approval card; "Accept all edits" lets it work through the task without stopping.
Which Claude plans include it, and what do they cost?
All paid plans. Here's claude.com/pricing as I read it on October 7, 2026:
- Pro: $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front), $20 billed monthly. Fine for a solo owner.
- Team: "For teams of 2 to 150." Standard seat $20 a seat a month billed annually, $25 monthly. Premium seat $100 annually, $125 monthly, for heavy users.
- Enterprise: $20 a seat a month billed annually, plus usage at API rates. This is the tier where the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on.
For a business, Team is the default answer, and my Claude Team plan breakdown covers what the shared workspace and admin controls get you. The full tier-by-tier picture lives in Claude AI pricing.
Workspace already includes Gemini. Do I pay for Claude on top?
This is the question I'd be asking if I ran a Google shop, so I read Google's own pricing page on October 7, 2026. Annual-commitment list prices, per user per month, before tax:
| Workspace plan | Price | Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides? |
|---|---|---|
| Business Starter | $7 | No. Gemini in Gmail and basic Gemini app only |
| Business Standard | $14 | Yes, plus Drive, Meet, Chat and expanded Gemini app |
| Business Plus | $22 | Yes, same Gemini as Standard plus Vault and more security |
Google was also showing a limited-time 20% off for three months for new signups. I left that out, because promos end and your bill doesn't.
The 10-person math
| Setup (10 people) | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace Business Standard alone | $140 | $1,680 |
| + Claude Team Standard, all 10, annual | $340 | $4,080 |
| + Claude Team Standard, all 10, monthly | $390 | $4,680 |
| + Claude Team Standard, 3 seats, annual | $200 | $2,400 |
Adding Claude to every seat more than doubles the software line: $2,400 more a year on annual billing, $3,000 more on monthly. On Business Starter the base drops to $70 a month, but you'd be paying for Claude because you have no AI in Docs or Sheets at all.
The last row is the one I'd actually start with. Team's minimum is two seats, and nothing says everyone needs one. Give it to the three people who live in spreadsheets and decks, and the add-on costs $60 a month on top of the Workspace you already pay for.
When is Gemini enough, and when is Claude worth the add-on?
Gemini is enough when:
- You're on Business Standard or higher and the AI work is light: summarize this thread, draft a first pass, tidy a paragraph.
- Most of the value you want is in Gmail and Meet, where Gemini is built in.
- Nobody on the team has asked for something Gemini couldn't do. Don't buy a fix for a complaint you haven't heard.
Claude is worth the add-on when:
- Someone rebuilds the same report every week and wants it done the same way every time. Saved skills that follow them into the Sheet are the real feature here.
- The job pulls from outside Google. The sidebar carries your Claude connectors, so a deck can draw on your CRM and your Drive notes in one ask.
- The spreadsheet work is real analysis: joins, cleanup, pivots, then a chart, without exporting to something else.
- Your team already pays for Claude. Then this is a free upgrade to a tool you own, and the only question is rollout.
I compared the two models head to head in Claude vs Gemini. If your office runs on Microsoft instead, the twin of this page is Claude for Microsoft 365.
What does "beta" mean for a business?
Read the announcement for what it says, not what you hope it says. It says the add-on and the connectors are both in beta. It says the connectors open files in a pane "on supported setups." It says Enterprise controls apply to the add-on on Enterprise plans.
What it doesn't say: an end date for the beta, whether pricing changes after, or any feature commitments. I'm not going to guess at data terms beyond those pages either. If that matters for your business, and it should, read your plan's terms and Anthropic's help center guide before you roll it out, not after.
The practical reading: treat beta like a sharp new hire. Useful on day one, supervised for the first month.
How should an admin roll it out?
- Deploy to a group first. The Google Admin console lets you push it to the domain or to selected groups. Start with a pilot group of two or three people, not the whole company.
- Keep "Ask before edits" on. It's the default for a reason. Every change shows up as an approval card. Switch to "Accept all edits" only for a person and a task that's proven itself.
- Enable the connectors on purpose. On Team and Enterprise, an owner or primary owner has to switch on the Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors. Decide who gets file creation from chat instead of flipping it on because the toggle exists.
- Fix sharing before you deploy. Claude's access matches your existing Google sharing permissions. Sharing permissions are the real boundary here, so the "anyone with the link" payroll sheet from 2022 is your problem, not Anthropic's.
- Write one skill before training anyone. Pick the report everyone rebuilds weekly, save the format as a skill, and show the pilot group that. One win beats a lunch-and-learn.
If you'd rather have someone else do the setup, that's my Claude for Small Business install: from $4,500, about 2 weeks and roughly 3 hours of your time, including activation, 5 connectors, one skill pack, training and a handoff doc. Claude Team seats are paid to Anthropic separately.
What to do this week
Check which Workspace plan you're on. If it's Starter, you have no AI in Docs or Sheets today, and a two-seat Claude Team trial on your heaviest spreadsheet users is the cheapest way to find out what you're missing. If it's Standard or Plus, use Gemini for a week on one real recurring report, then try the same report in Claude. Keep whichever one you didn't have to babysit.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Claude for Google Workspace free?
- No. As of October 2026 the add-on is in public beta on all paid Claude plans, so you need a paid seat: Pro is $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 billed monthly, and Team Standard seats are $20 a seat a month billed annually or $25 monthly. The add-on itself has no separate charge listed in Anthropic's announcement.
- Which Claude plans include the Google Docs add-on?
- All paid plans, per Anthropic's October 6, 2026 announcement: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise, an owner or primary owner has to turn on the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors before people can create and edit Google files from the Claude chat. Enterprise plans also get the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export applied to the add-on.
- Claude vs Gemini in Google Sheets: which should I use?
- If you're on Business Standard or higher, Gemini in Sheets is already included, so start there for quick summaries and charts. Claude earns the extra seat when the work is multi-step: writing formulas across tabs, building pivot tables and native charts, pulling a range into Python for joins or cleanup and writing the results back, or reusing a saved skill so every report follows the same format. On Business Starter, Gemini isn't in Sheets at all.
- How do I install Claude in Google Docs?
- Install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a Doc, Sheet or Slides file, and go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Admins can deploy it to the whole domain or to selected groups from the Google Admin console. Sign in with your Claude account and the sidebar carries the same models, connectors and skills you already use in Claude.
- Can Claude see every file in our Google Drive?
- Anthropic says Claude's access matches your existing Google sharing permissions. In practice that means it can reach what the signed-in person can already reach, so a messy sharing setup is the real risk, not the add-on. Clean up 'anyone with the link' files and over-shared folders before you deploy it widely.
