ChatGPT for nonprofits: the short answer

As of September 2026, eligible nonprofits get ChatGPT Business Standard seats for $8 a user a month billed annually, or $10 billed monthly, instead of the regular $20 and $25. Premium seats aren't discounted. Larger nonprofits can get up to 75% off ChatGPT Enterprise through OpenAI's sales team. Verification runs through Goodstack, and there's no nonprofit discount on the API. Nonprofit teams are exactly the people who get the most out of this stuff. Small staff, endless writing, grant deadlines, and a board that wants a report yesterday. The discount makes the math easy. The fine print is where people trip.

What the nonprofit discount actually is

A Standard seat includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, admin controls, and OpenAI's commitment not to train on your data. Everything about what those seats include is on ChatGPT Business pricing. Nonprofits pay the same product at 60% off.

Why you'll see 20%, 60%, and 75% quoted

Search this and you'll find three different discounts. Here's where each comes from.

• 20% off. When OpenAI launched OpenAI for Nonprofits in May 2024, it offered 20% off what was then ChatGPT Team. Team was renamed ChatGPT Business in August 2025, and the discount changed since. Pages still quoting 20% are out of date.
• 60% off. That's the current Business math: $8 against $20 annually, $10 against $25 monthly. OpenAI states it as a price, not a percentage.
• 75% off. OpenAI's help article applies "up to a 75% discount" to Enterprise. Its main pricing page FAQ says "up to a 75% discount on ChatGPT Business or ChatGPT Enterprise." The help article is the one with the mechanics, so budget on $8 Standard seats and treat 75% as an Enterprise conversation.

How to apply, step by step

1. Pick the email first. Use the address that owns (or will own) your ChatGPT Business workspace. OpenAI matches the discount to it.
2. Submit the verification form. It's linked from OpenAI's OpenAI for Nonprofits help article. OpenAI partners with Goodstack to validate eligibility, and doesn't publish the full criteria on its own page.
3. If you already pay for Business: once approved, the discount is prorated onto your current billing cycle and applies going forward.
4. If you don't yet: after approval, create your OpenAI account and sign up for ChatGPT Business. The discount applies automatically to Standard seats at checkout. OpenAI says you'll see it after you choose seats and click "continue to billing."
5. If you get turned down: OpenAI sends eligibility questions to Goodstack, not to its own support.

What 10 seats cost a nonprofit

• 10 Standard seats, annual: $80 a month, $960 a year. The same seats at regular price run $2,400 a year, so you keep $1,440.
• 10 Standard seats, monthly: $100 a month, $1,200 a year, versus $3,000 regular.
• The smallest possible workspace: Business needs at least 2 seats, so $16 a month billed annually.

Business or Enterprise for a nonprofit?

OpenAI's own guidance: Business "is the best fit for small to medium-sized teams," and Enterprise is for "larger organizations needing API access, customization, and higher level security features." Business covers teams of 2 to 200.

If you're under 200 people and don't need invoicing, custom data retention, or a compliance agreement, Business at $8 a seat is the answer, and you can start this week. Enterprise is a sales process, which is worth it when you're large enough that "up to 75% off" is a real number.

Three things the discount doesn't cover

• The API. If you're building a donor chatbot or an intake tool on OpenAI's models, that's billed separately at full price.
• Premium seats. Mixed workspaces pay regular price on every Premium seat.
• Health data. OpenAI doesn't offer a BAA for ChatGPT Business, discounted or not. Clinics, counseling services, and other health-adjacent nonprofits should read is ChatGPT HIPAA compliant before anyone pastes a client record into it.

The first three workflows I'd set up

OpenAI's nonprofit article suggests grant review, research summaries, and sentiment analysis. I'd start in the same place, with one change: build them as shared projects or GPTs so the whole team uses the same setup. GPT creation isn't available on personal ChatGPT accounts anymore, but it is in Business workspaces.

1. Grant reviewer. Upload the funder's criteria and your draft. Ask ChatGPT to score the draft against each criterion, explain each score, and rewrite the weakest section. It won't win the grant for you. It will catch the requirement you skimmed.
2. Donor and board updates. Feed it program numbers and three stories from the field, and have it draft the thank-you letters, the newsletter blurb, and the board summary from the same source. One input, three outputs, one human edit.
3. Program research. Hand it the research paper nobody has time to read and ask for the findings that matter to your program design. Then check the citations, because a confident summary is not a correct one.
