Is Gemini Free? Yes, on Flash-Lite. Here's What the $0 Plan Leaves Out (2026)
The short answer
Yes, Gemini is free. As of October 30, 2026, anyone with a Google account can use it for $0, and the free plan includes Deep Research, Canvas, Gems, image generation, Gemini Live and 15 GB of storage. The catch is the model: Google's plans page now lists Flash-Lite on Free, its smallest model, and not the Gemini 4 Argon you've been reading about. That needs Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month.
Everybody's headline is "Gemini is free." True, and also the least useful thing you could know about it. The two things that matter are which model answers you, and what you're allowed to paste in it at work.
What you get for $0
| Free | Google AI Plus | Google AI Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $4.99 a month | $19.99 a month |
| Main model listed | Flash-Lite | Flash | Gemini 4 Argon, plus Pro and Flash |
| Usage | Base limit | 2x Free | 4x Free |
| Deep Research, Canvas, Gems, Live | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google Flow video credits | Limited | 200 | 1,000 |
Google doesn't publish a prompt count for any of this. The limit is compute-based, it refreshes every 5 hours until you hit a weekly limit, and a Deep Research run costs far more of it than a short question. The full breakdown, including what to do when you run out, is on Gemini usage limits.
Developers get a separate answer: the Gemini API has its own free tier on some models, but Google's price list shows none for Gemini 4 Argon.
The catch nobody puts in the headline: Flash-Lite
On October 28, Google's plans page showed Flash-Lite as the model on the free plan. Flash-Lite is built to be fast and cheap. For a quick rewrite, a summary or a meal plan, you won't care. For a contract review or a long spreadsheet question, you're judging Gemini by its smallest model, and you might write off the whole product because of it.
So if a colleague says Gemini gave them a great answer and it gave you a bad one, check which plan each of you is on before you argue about it. Two people can be using "Gemini" and not be using the same thing.
Can you use free Gemini for work?
This is the part I'd want an owner to read twice. Google updated its Gemini privacy page on October 26, 2026, and it says it plainly: if your Keep Activity setting is on, don't enter data that's confidential or that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see, or Google to use to improve its services.
Three lines from that page matter for a personal account:
- Turning Keep Activity off stops your future chats being reviewed to improve Google's services, and they won't be used to improve its AI models unless you submit feedback.
- Even with it off, Google still uses your chats to respond and to protect its users, including with help from human reviewers.
- Temporary chats and Keep Activity-off chats are kept with your account for 72 hours.
That's a fair deal for a free product. It isn't a place for a client's contract, an employee's file or next quarter's numbers. A free personal login also means the company owns nothing: when that employee leaves, their chats and prompts go with them.
What to pay for, if anything
Do the math on the job, not the plan:
- You, on a personal account, hitting the limit: Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, $59.88 a year, doubles your usage. Pay this if the limit is your only complaint.
- You want the newest model: Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, $239.88 a year.
- A team with work data: Google Workspace. Ten people on Business Starter at $7 a user a month, billed annually, is $840 a year, and Gemini is in Gmail and its own app there. Docs, Sheets and Meet start at Business Standard, $14.
Every assistant has this same shape, by the way. Claude's free plan is real too, and the same two questions apply: which model, and what can you paste?
If your team is already using free accounts for real work, that's the problem worth fixing first, and it's a smaller job than it sounds. An AI implementation starts with the same three questions: who's on what account, what they're pasting, and which plan the company should own.
Today's micro-action
Open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, check whether Keep Activity is on, and decide on purpose. It takes two minutes. If you're an owner, ask your team one question at your next meeting: "Which AI are you using, and on whose account?"

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Gemini free to use?
- Yes. As of October 30, 2026, Gemini is free with a Google account. The free plan runs on Flash-Lite and includes image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage, with usage limits that refresh every 5 hours until a weekly cap.
- Is Gemini free forever?
- Google lists a $0 plan with no end date, but it also says limits can change. What you get on free has already moved: Google's plans page now lists Flash-Lite as the free model. Check gemini.google/subscriptions before you build a habit around any one feature.
- Is Gemini 4 free?
- No. Google's plans page lists Gemini 4 Argon on Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and up, not on Free. Its API price list shows no free tier for Argon either.
- Is Gemini free for business use?
- You can sign in with a personal Google account and use it at work, but I wouldn't put client data there. Google's privacy page says that if Keep Activity is on, you shouldn't enter anything confidential or anything you wouldn't want a reviewer to see. A business needs a Google Workspace plan, from $7 a user a month billed annually.
- Is Gemini better than free ChatGPT?
- That depends on the job. Gemini's free plan is generous with features and storage, and it's the easy pick if you live in Gmail and Google Docs. What matters more for most people is which free limit you hit first, so try your real weekly task in both before you pay for either.

ChatGPT Plus vs Business, as of September 2026: Plus is $20 a month for one person and OpenAI may train on your chats unless you opt out; Business is $20 a seat billed annually or $25 monthly, two seats minimum, with no training by default, admin controls, shared projects for groups, and the Company Knowledge plugin. ChatGPT for customer service, as of September 2026: it drafts replies, answers policy questions from your own documents, and triages an inbox for $20 to $25 a seat a month on ChatGPT Business. ChatGPT for Excel is OpenAI's official add-in that puts ChatGPT inside your workbook, and as of October 2026 it's available on every plan, including Free. It builds sheets, writes formulas and explains them. A typical task uses 5 to 20 credits a message, which is what decides whether your plan covers it.
