Gemini Gems Are Becoming Skills: What Changes and When (2026)
The short answer
Gemini Gems are saved sets of instructions you reuse in Google's Gemini app, and Google is replacing them with skills. Skills started rolling out in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026 and should reach everyone by mid-November. Personal Google accounts lose Gems starting in November. Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit accounts keep them until March 2027 at the earliest, and education accounts until June 2027. Whatever Gems are left at that point turn into inactive draft skills that someone has to switch back on.
If your team built Gems for proposals, client emails or SOPs, nothing breaks this week. But every Gem you rely on now has an end date, and the automatic migration hands you drafts, not working tools. Below: what changes, the dates by account type, and which Gems to rebuild first.
What are Gemini Gems?
A Gem is a custom version of Gemini. You write the instructions once ("you are our proposal writer, use this structure, this tone, these three case examples"), attach a few knowledge files, and open that Gem whenever you need the job done instead of pasting the same long prompt into a new chat. For a business, Gems were the easiest way to turn one person's good prompt into something the whole team used.
They had two limits. A Gem lives in its own window, so you can't call it in the middle of another chat. And Gems can't be used in Workspace apps; Google's admin guide says so plainly. That second limit is most of the reason skills exist.
What skills do that Gems don't
Google lists four differences in its admin guide, and the September 30 announcement adds two more:
- They work in more places. Skills are meant to run in the Gemini app and inside Workspace apps, one set of instructions for chat and for workflows.
- You call them in any chat. Type / and the skill's name (Google says @ is coming). No separate window.
- You can stack them. A brand-voice skill plus a proposal-structure skill in the same prompt, which a Gem couldn't do.
- They're a portable file. Skills use the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md format, so the instructions can move between tools. Claude's Skills are SKILL.md files too; how those work is in how to use Claude Skills.
- They carry reference files. Plain text, PDFs and images, as of the September 30 launch.
- Gemini can build them for you. It can turn a chat into a skill and run one automatically when a prompt matches it.
Two Gem features hadn't arrived yet on launch day: sharing a skill with other people and adding files from Google Drive. Google says both are coming "in the coming weeks."
The dates, by account type
| Date | What happens | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| October 13, 2026 | Skills start rolling out in the Gemini app; finished by mid-November. Gems and skills both work. | Everyone |
| Delayed (was October 5 to mid-November) | Skills inside Workspace apps. On October 13 Google said this is "delayed until further notice." | Workspace Business and Enterprise plans |
| November 2026 | Support for Gems starts going away. Google's Opal mini-app experiment shuts down at the same time. | Personal Google accounts |
| November 17, 2026 | Gems move into Settings in the Gemini app; you can still create, edit and use them. | Workspace accounts |
| No sooner than March 1, 2027 | No creating, editing or using Gems. "Ask a Gem" steps in Workspace Studio flows stop working. Leftover Gems become draft skills. | Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit |
| No sooner than June 1, 2027 | The same, plus Gems in Google Classroom and Gemini LTI. | Workspace for Education |
One timing trap for Workspace shops: if a team rebuilds its Gems as skills in the Gemini app today, those skills won't show up in Gmail or Docs later. Google says skills "don't sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps," so anything you want in both places has to be recreated in Google Workspace Studio. With the Workspace rollout on hold, the sensible order is to rebuild in the Gemini app now and recreate in Studio once it arrives.
What happens to your Gems in the migration
When Google runs the automatic migration, each Gem turns into a skill in its creator's list with these rules:
- It arrives as an inactive draft. The creator has to open it, review it and activate it. Until then nobody can use it, including the people it was shared with.
- The content carries over: name, description, instructions and uploaded knowledge files.
- Drive sharing carries over to the new skill.
- Some things don't migrate at all. Gems built in Google Labs are turned down without moving to skills.
The inactive-draft rule is the one that bites a business. The person who built the team's best Gem may have left, or may not notice a list of drafts on the day the old Gem stops working. Google's admin guide says it will publish full migration details at least 30 days before the automatic migration starts.
Should you still build a Gem today?
For anything you'll use past November, no. Build a skill instead: it's the same work (instructions plus reference files) and it won't need redoing. Google's own advice to admins is to have people "manually rebuild their critical Gems as skills early," copying the instructions and re-uploading the knowledge files by hand, rather than waiting for the migration.
Gems still work, so a quick throwaway Gem for a one-week project is fine. Just don't build anything on Gems that a workflow depends on, and don't add new "Ask a Gem" steps to Workspace Studio flows (Studio already won't let you).
What I'd do this month if your team uses Gems
- List every Gem people actually use. Ask the team, not the admin console. Expect a handful that matter, for example proposal or quote drafting, client email replies, an SOP or policy helper, meeting-notes cleanup.
- Rebuild the top three as skills now, by the person who owns each job. Copy the instructions, re-upload the files, test them on last week's real work.
- Write the SKILL.md so it travels. Since the format is open, keep the master copy in a shared folder. If you also use Claude, the same instructions move over with little editing.
- Fix any Workspace Studio flow with an "Ask a Gem" step before March 2027, and tell the team the date that applies to your account type.
If you're still deciding which Google plan the team should be on in the first place, the limits by plan are in Gemini usage limits, and whether the $20 tier pays for itself is in is Google AI Pro worth it. Weighing Gemini against Claude for the whole team is Claude vs Gemini.
Who can help a team move its Gems to skills?
Most teams can do the four steps above themselves in an afternoon. Where it gets harder is when Gems are woven into how the business runs: client-facing drafts, Studio flows, shared knowledge files nobody owns. That inventory and the decision about what to rebuild, retire or replace is part of the AI Readiness Assessment I run, $2,500 flat over two weeks, for businesses with 10 to 200 people.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What are Gemini Gems?
- Gems are custom versions of Gemini that you set up once with your own instructions and optional knowledge files, then reuse instead of retyping the same prompt. Google is replacing them with skills, which do the same job but also work inside Workspace apps and can be combined in one prompt.
- Are Gemini Gems going away?
- Yes. Google's September 30, 2026 announcement says support for Gems ends starting in November 2026 for personal accounts, in March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit customers (no sooner than March 1, 2027, per the admin guide), and in June 2027 for education. Remaining Gems are migrated to skills automatically.
- What happens to my Gems when they migrate?
- They show up in your skills list as inactive drafts. Each keeps its name, description, instructions and uploaded knowledge files, and Drive sharing carries over, but you have to review and activate each one before you or anyone you shared it with can use it. Gems built in Google Labs do not migrate.
- What is the difference between Gems and skills in Gemini?
- A Gem is a separate custom chat you open. A skill is called inside any chat by typing / and its name, several skills can be stacked in one prompt, skills can carry reference files like PDFs and images, and they work in Workspace apps as well as the Gemini app. Skills are written in the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md format, so the instructions can move to other tools.
- Should I still create a Gemini Gem?
- Not for anything you plan to use after November. Gems still work today, but Google's own guidance to admins is to rebuild important Gems as skills early rather than wait for the automatic migration. Skills reached the Gemini app on October 13, 2026, with the rollout finishing by mid-November.
- Do Gemini skills work in Gmail and Docs?
- That's the plan, but not yet. Skills in Workspace apps are for Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Enterprise plans, Google AI Pro for Education and the AI Expanded Access add-on, and on October 13, 2026 Google said that rollout is delayed until further notice. Skills made in the Gemini app also don't sync to Workspace; you recreate them in Google Workspace Studio.
