Base44 Pricing (2026): What It Actually Costs to Build and Ship

TL;DR: The Sticker Is $16. The Story Isn't.

Base44's pricing page will take you about ninety seconds to read. This post exists because the pricing page is maybe a third of what shipping on Base44 actually costs.

I maintain 8+ Base44 apps that founders handed me when they hit the platform's walls, and I run Vibe Code Rescue — so I've seen the invoices from every phase: the $16 honeymoon, the credit top-up panic, and the eventual migration estimate that makes everyone quiet. Context in one line: Base44 is the prompt-to-app builder Wix bought for $80M in June 2025, six months after launch — 2M+ users and roughly $100M ARR by Q1 2026. It's legit. The question is what it costs you, end to end.

Base44 Pricing Tiers (2026)

Two footnotes the table can't hold. First, effective pricing trended 15–30% higher per equivalent app after the Wix acquisition — same plan names, worse credit-to-dollar ratio, and the free tier shrank from 100 messages to 25. Second, credit burn is unpredictable: when the AI gets stuck on a feature and retries, those retries come out of your allowance. Heavy build weeks routinely blow through a tier.

What the Free Plan Really Lets You Do

The free plan is a test drive, and a short one. Twenty-five message credits covers your first prompt — which genuinely will produce a working app, that part of the magic is real — plus maybe two or three iterations. Then the meter stops.

That's enough to answer one question: do you like building this way? It is not enough to validate an idea, build an internal tool, or ship anything with your name on it. Budget $16/month as the actual floor, and know that a serious build month on Starter often ends with an upgrade to Builder anyway.

To Base44's credit, unlimited apps on the free tier means you can keep old prototypes around forever. That's more generous than most of the category.

The Costs Beyond the Subscription

Here's the section no affiliate pricing post writes, because there's no referral link for any of it.

1. The migration tax. Your app lives on Base44's platform — its managed database, its auth, its hosting. That bundling is why $16/month feels like a steal on day one. It's also why leaving is expensive on day 400: there's no clean export-everything path, and GitHub code export was still in beta on most plans as of mid-2026. When a Base44 app outgrows the platform, the realistic options are a rebuild on a standard stack — and rebuilds start in the thousands, not the tens. Price the exit before you move in.

2. Integrations and the app around the app. Stripe means transaction fees. Real email volume means a sending service. Anything past the native integrations (Stripe, Slack, Google Sheets, SendGrid/Twilio) means credits burned on workarounds — or a wall you can't prompt through. None of this is Base44's fault. It's just what apps cost, and it's not on the pricing page.

3. The rework tax. Every AI builder — Base44 included — produces an app that's roughly 80% done and demos like it's 100%. The missing 20% is authorization checks, input validation, webhook verification, and edge cases. If your app touches real money or real data, a professional review-and-harden pass runs $2,000–$10,000 before launch. Base44 vs Lovable vs Bolt on Price

The three names people cross-shop, as of 2026:

• Base44: from $16/month annual, everything bundled. Cheapest total bill for a small project; hardest to leave.

• Bolt.new: Pro around $20–25/month, token-metered — burns fastest on bigger codebases, and deployment is on you ($0–20/month for Netlify or Vercel).

The pattern: Base44 wins the first invoice, Lovable wins the handoff, Bolt wins the stopwatch. Pick by which of those you'll care about in six months.

Total Cost of Ownership: Three Scenarios

The side project. A tool for yourself, your family, your team of four. Free tier to taste it, Starter at $16/month annual to actually build. Total: $0–$192/year, and the lock-in doesn't matter because there's nothing to migrate. This is Base44's best-value scenario, full stop.

The validating founder. Testing whether strangers will use (or pay for) a thing, 30–90 day horizon. One or two months of Builder at $40–$50 while building hard, then Starter to idle. Total to a validated-or-killed answer: roughly $60–$150. Absurdly cheap next to the $5,000+ a freelance MVP costs — and if the idea dies, you lose almost nothing. Just go in knowing that if it works, the next line item is a re-platform or a professional hardening pass.

The real business app. Paying customers, customer data, your reputation attached. Builder or Pro at $40–$80/month, plus the $2K–$10K pre-launch review, plus a budgeted migration path for the day the platform's rails pinch. Realistic year one: $3,000–$12,000 all-in — still a fraction of a $30K–$150K agency build, but 6–25x the number the pricing page put in your head.

When the $16 Plan Is Genuinely All You Need

I fix AI-built apps for a living, which makes me the natural person to scare you about them — so believe me when I say the opposite: for a lot of builders, Starter at $16/month is the whole answer.

If your app is internal, low-stakes, and fits the platform's rails; if your users number in the dozens; if nobody's card number or medical history lives in it — stay on Starter and ship. The upgrade triggers are specific: you're burning through credits monthly (move to Builder), you're about to charge real money (buy the review before you buy anything else), or you're hiring a developer (start pricing the exit, because they'll need code they can own).
